How to Win at First Person Shooters

How to Win at First Person Shooters

Make sure you're comfortable. It's smart to use the restroom before playing.

(If you have an itch while you're playing, scratch it during your next respawn.)

Center your Screen. Also, the closer your eyes are to the screen, the better.

Place your hands on your desk, evenly-spaced, and then,

lean on your Mousing arm, and then slide your chair, to re-center your view,

and then, move your keyboard, and mouse and mousepad, under your hands.

Give your mouse cord some extra slack, and make sure it's not dragging.

Turning up your game's brightness setting, can help you see targets easier.

Wear a more camouflaged outfit, instead of something easier to see.

Familiarization with Weapons, Power-ups and Maps, improves your performance.

Rule #1: Get a good gun. LMGs.

Rule #2: Never stand still, except when sniping, and then, not for long.

Get psyched-up, and push yourself as hard as you can, every second of the game.

4-way strafing + enthusiastic attack + aim at the neck + zig-zag towards targets.

* USE MOUSE ACCELERATION * (Or it's way too hard to aim.)

Make your mouse sensitivity match, your natural reflexes.

Mouse sensitivity is a trade-off, between aiming focus, and turning speed.

Make it as low as you can, while still being able to turn quickly enough.

I find being able to turn 1/3 of a circle in one motion easily to be ideal.

If you're swinging wildly when aiming in on targets, lower it.

If you can't turn fast enough, raise it.

Always use any available Fast-Travel options, such as jump-pads and ziplines.

Cross open areas carefully and quickly. Use walls and doorways for cover.

High-ground, hopping and flanking help.

Get the ideal distance to your target for your weapon, then circle-strafe un-predictably.

For reloads, either swap weapons, or else time your taking cover, to reload.

Almost never, switch targets.

Make circles sometimes to scan your surroundings, and, focus intensely, on your target.*

*OR: Look at your targets as blurs.

Making small circles while running, helps you to begin to aim-in on your target.

Ignore the score until the end.

(Many of my best games, have had the worst starts.)

Try to not be predictable going for power-ups. And, shoot at others who are.

Armor helps.

Larger Magazines help.

Teamwork helps:

In APEX, your goal is to get the Knockdown Shot, to get the frag.

You'll get higher frag counts going where the traffic is, instead of camping.

Every respawn, race to get to the high-traffic area immediately,

engaging the first target you encounter, on the way.

Easy targets are the best. Bear in mind who you've easily defeated.

Spot your targets before they spot you.

Return fire. When hit by an unseen enemy, immediately attack them.

Try to hit with your first shot.

Pulling-back can reduce a target's strafing effectiveness.

Better to waste bullets than conserve them.

Strafe + Turn into your targets.

Strafe more, and Mouse less.

Employ zig-zag strafing when running toward your target, and for aiming.

When your target begins to shoot at you, reverse direction.

After practicing all of this, forget it all and just go crazy awhile,

and you'll see it's becoming natural!

Alternate, between concentrating, and just going wild.

Go with your reflexes.

Push down on the mouse hard, when fighting, and concentrate.

Zig-zag to targets.

"Steady aim."

Strafe, Mouse. Strafe, Mouse.

In APEX, wiggling left and right can tighten your group.

* HOW TO AIM: *

Use BOTH HANDS to aim-in.

Focus on aiming-in with your Strafing hand, and moving Up and Down with your Mouse.

ALTERNATE CONCENTRATING ON EACH OF YOUR HANDS, AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE, DURING BATTLES.

(That, is "HOW TO WIN." It's the most important sentence in this entire document.)

* Strive to tightly sweep the neck. *

Aim at the leading-edge, (direction they're going,) of your target.

Zig-zag Medium unpredictably, reverse if attacked. Close-in on target.

Aim-in Quicker and Steadier.

Aim Quickly and Steadily. Zig-zag Medium.

Frenzy your targets, by getting in their faces.

When a target bounces around you wildly, switch to your reflexes.

In hectic close-combat, shooting wildly while trying to aim-in, often works.

Get creative with your movements, whenever engaging erratic targets.

If smoke is deployed near you, pull-back and away, while firing wildly into it.

(In APEX, I'm binding a Mouse button to Punch/Kick.)

In APEX, after kicking down a door, pull-back and away, before entering.

In APEX, players drop various Defenses. Destroy them, 'as soon as possible'.

Play once without sound, so you can realize how distracting it is.

(You'll play better with it off. But don't play with it off normally.)

When losing battles, just keep doing your best, and you'll sometimes win.

You'd be surprised how many frags you can get, while having very-low health.

If you are striving, you will find that you may very-often lose frags, by one shot.

I call those "One-shotters". Therefore your goal should be to get one shot better.

And then they'll all be frags!

Three more notes:

Sometimes targets will have low health, and go down in one or two or three shots.

There is no Friendly Fire. So constantly unload your weapons everywhere.

It's a game. You don't have to do well at it. Stare at the sky a little bit.

I do!

This is a work in progress. <<<<<<<<

I'm Silencer7770.

I shined brightest with the first Unreal.

I'm 54 years old, [Edit, no politics/religion - EA_Barry]

The best I've done lately is 11.

But, I'm working on it! (The "HOW TO WIN" part. I'm just super-lazy!)

I have some suggestions for the game.

Apex Suggestions:

Make previous teammates ALWAYS show-up after matches to invite.

Make the F! to say Thank-you message last 1/2 to 1 second longer.

Make trackers for Mixtape mode, so I can show my Frags.

Make a single-player Deathmatch mode.

Make the Mixtape modes always independently available.

OR at least "always, have a DM mode available." Any of them. <<<<<<< <<<<<<<

Make using auto-run not happen when double-tapping forward.

It screws-up my movement during combat, so I "have" to, play with it off.

On the main screen, it would be cool to see some type of a scale showing how many players are queued for all of the game types, and how long it's been since the last launch. Especially for slow hours. (I play at the slowest hours often.)

This game ROCKS!

And is KICK-*!

Thank-you!

Lots of very good advice there. PC-centric, but good. Don't know if you've ever played on a controller, but if so then do an edit that talks about how all of the above changes if you have a thumbstick.

Handful of things that I can see people taking the wrong way:

"Get psyched-up, and push yourself as hard as you can, every second of the game. 4-way strafing + enthusiastic attack + aim at the neck + zig-zag towards targets."

I see where you're going with this, but there are far too many players in the game who will interpret this as a blank check to drop hot, push solo, and die repeatedly. Which I don't think is what you meant at all.

A lot of the advice about the mechanics of an attack seem to me to be mnk specific. Strafing on a controller is like blurring yourself just enough that the servers end up thinking you're twice the size you really are and therefore twice as easy to hit. 20 plus years of fps controller strafing hasn't made me better. It's taught me to stop trying. Though I could say that about so many other things as well....

"If you are striving, you will find that you may very-often lose frags, by one shot. I call those "One-shotters". Therefore your goal should be to get one shot better. And then they'll all be frags!"

For me the above quote really sums up your attitude. Which is laudable, but, imo, flawed. If you, as a player, have a striver's mindset then it's good advice. But for the average schlub who just wants to play a match or two before dinner a couple nights a week, it's untenable. And it points out what is for me the fatal flaw in all competitive shooters, and that's the diminishing returns on improvement. At some point you find yourself doing ten times the work for one percent better stats. More power to those who want to make this into a job, but for me working that hard really takes all the fun out of the experience. Maybe that's just me. I say give yourself permission to be average if that's what it takes to enjoy the game.

I like your enthusiasm ,however Apex and here I will just get into the BR modes, is more than just a game of movement and aiming skills.

Those two skills are very important to keep up and improve on but will not win you games all in of themselves.

Learning the maps, honing game sense/awareness, knowing where and when to rotate, when to gate keep or not, when to push fights and or when and how to reposition from a bad fight or position. Moving to and finding the best positions in the end game and or when to push the other team off the god spot.

Having a dedicated 3 person team helps a lot, as team play and comms is very high on the skills needed. Teammates need to know what their role is: entry fragger, anchor, support, floater, off angle, flex, and IGL/CO IGL.

    See Link Apex Roles

These things you will need to learn in order to do better than 11th place.

    Hey reconzero!

That's very-thoughtful commentary you added.  You're no troll!

I really connected with your ending, and I actually mentioned that in my latest update, which I haven't posted yet.

    I will soon!

    (And, I did say:  "If".)

    ;o)

    I say:

    "Three more notes:

There is no Friendly Fire. So constantly unload your weapons everywhere.

    I do!"

    That last part!

    Hey Asmodeus566!

    Thanks for your valuable input.

Your comments are centered around APEX specifically, and you're right.  Those are all excellent tips for APEX for sure.  Thank-you!

But dear, I said 11 frags, not 11th place.

    Ty!
