An ex Dev once said on stream that sbmm is like a Rollercoaster where it gives you easy matches then hard matches then easy/hard, etc for player retention. Is that really better than just always being matched up with players your skill level? I'd personally would like the latter, eventually it would take a second to balance out bur eventually matches for would more consistent in terms of being fun and engaging.

@DankToliet I don’t believe much thought has gone into the SBMM in Apex for quite some time. It’s quite readable after many hours played, if you search solo the system say it’s ok to give you reasonable match ups but your team mates are like opening a loot box every match, if you search as a duo the system says give them a crap team mate to carry and put them up against sweaty players 90% of the time, and god help you if your an average player who gets together with two friends because the system just has no subtlety at all, your just thrown straight in with stacked diamond/master/preds and smurfs 99% of the time. It does allow you the 1% as a match you can just about win, but I wouldn’t recommend it because the SBMM doesn’t seem to care if it was an awesome damage/kill win or a just scraped it win, your in for a world of pain next few matches because it actually manages to find even nastier players for you to be stepped on by. It’s actually quite spectacular being put up against stacked teams with triple animated pred badges! Great work on the effort that’s gone into this SBMM Respawn.

@DankToliet The "roller coaster" is engagement based matchmaking. For the average player, it gives you a slow morphine drip of success in between getting destroyed. I personally prefer it to what we have now which is completely broken or nonexistent matchmaking. I basically get obliterated 95% of the time and the 1 in 25 games that feel right have vanished. IMO, the new level system completely broke the matchmaking sort of like Ranked was broken last season. It might take a split or two to balance out to "normal".

Is Roller Coaster SBMM better than just playing w/similarly skilled?

Lol, that doesn't make me feel any better hahaha.
I still don't want to destroy ppl way below my skill level, just as much as I do not wish to be obliterated by ppl way above my skill level. I just want to play against ppl with the same skill level. That video for me anyway, seems like those are the only two options.
