Last time this happened to me was in season 3 or 4, but from what I remember that got fixed by the next patch. Had no issues lately, even killed a bunch of enemies with some barrels left way behind.
There was a youtube video on how to properly place gas cans, in which the creator warned about placing them incorrectly near doors. There's a high chance they won't get activated if there's an opened door between the gas can and the enemy.
Most notably, at Estates i placed one AWAY from a door and in the middle of the side wall to a room right next to an Octane, nothing happened.
I placed a canister next to next to the respawn beacon in the middle of Sorting Factory. The Pathfinder walked right next to it and danced all around it in tight close quarters of the freight containers
I placed gas at the phase runner gateways and off to the sides. Even when landed on top of by MULTIPLE SQUADS and walked into, they didn't engage and were detonated by a grenade
I guess Horizon and Gibby are getting all the love this season
It's gonna be difficult to do that as I'm on Xbox and getting the vids edited and put on screw-you tube might take some time
