I think the auto banner may be there for testing whether or not it impacts leavers.
I doubt it will help people stay. The reasons I quit upon dying are not related to whether my team will actually pick my banner up, but definitely it is a forecast of the likelihood my team mates will have of winning a gunfight. At times I quit because the time they take looting are abnormal for anyone above level 100.
If you have enough experience, you realize that a team is doomed when you try to communicate with team mates and get no answers, you ping enemies and they take forever to get into the fight, given they will fight at all, their positioning throughout the game is bad, their timing is non existent, and how they behaved the past fights is more of a drag then a help, as well as how they move and loot is way too slow.
those are the indicators, for me, of whether after giving a good chance i decide to stick around or just leave upon death --or right away before any fights.
It all boils down to matchmaking. IMO MM does not need to have teams balanced with respect to each other, but balanced within the team --that is in PUBS. Ranked needs to be balanced within the team as well as within the lobby.
