Extreme Packet Loss

So I moved into a new apartment. I just had ATT Fiber Internet Installed with a plan that downloads and uploads up to 1GB speeds.

Since it was installed there has been nothing but problems when trying to play Apex Legends. And what I say problems, I mean CRIPPLING packet loss.

But here’s the kicker.. When I go to test multiplayer connection my upload/download speeds are all 200-450mbps, 25-34 latency, 0% packet loss and OPEN NAT.

When I boot up Apex the main menu screen tells me my ping ranges from 25-34ms with 0% packets loss as well.

But when I load into the game? Queue the permanent packet loss symbol because it’s there waiting for me. The game lags so bad it feels like the games will crash.

So I thought maybe it’s my router? I went to Best Buy today and bought the NETGEAR Nighthawk gaming router. I pushed everything over to the new Nighthawk router, added forwarded ports for Xbox Live and Apex Legends, and tried again. Same issue.

Im at wits end and do not know what to do. All my devices at home including smart tv stream and load lightning quick, zero issues. But when I load into a game on Apex, at best I will have 2-3 playable games before the issues starts again making Apex unplayable.

Somebody please, help me. Again, I have open NAT, high download/upload speeds, 0% packet loss at game menu and Xbox connection testing. UPnP is enabled on router. Equipment has been restarted numerous times. Specific port forwards are assigned to my Xbox.

What am I possibly missing?

That test is showing high ping times and timeouts. Those are happening before you reach our servers. It sounds like you've gone through some extensive troubleshooting so I'm not sure what else to suggest. It's not happening with our servers so this would be up to your ISP. It's unfortunate you don't have a PC as the UO Trace gives more information that could be useful.

  • I also am having these issues. My internet isn’t the fastest but it is a business internet that has been adjusted so I can get decent ping and play my games. This started two updates ago before season 6 came out. I always check my severs regularly every time I load up the game and my ping for the best server was always around 80s with 2-4 packet loss. That allowed me to play with having a fair chance. Now I’m lucky to get high 90s but it goes up into the 100s most of the time. When I do a detailed network check on Xbox my ping is 80-85 with 0 packet loss and open nat.  It does not ever change at anytime of the day when I randomly check. This has been my setup for several years and the only thing that has changed is the apex connection. I went a step further and replaced the nighthawk modem router I’ve used for 4 years with another one identical and replace all my wires and Ethernet cord. I always make sure nothing else is drawing from my connection before I play and do my tests. I also am using my daughters new Xbox one just to see if my Xbox one has a issue. It’s the same. Nothing has improved.  A friend of mine is also having issues but his is much worse and unplayable due to lagging. I do not lag however but I die quicker since my latency is so high. It’s a very noticeable difference for sure. I really love the game and have a lot of money tied up into it. Would love to find a fix or solution to get my latency back down into the 80s like it had been since day one of apex release. Thanks

  • hi, I am playing on a Xbox one x. I went ahead and did the trace the other night when I was reading how to do it on the other comments. Maybe this will help to see what is going on.

  • This is one from just now. It’s being done on WiFi through my iPad. I would say the Xbox may read a little differently since it’s hard wired

Those test results will be a lot different since you're testing on a wireless connection. It's showing some very high ping times before you reach our servers. That would be causing the lag/disconnects, but it's going to be a lot better when testing from a wired connection. Can you run the test on a PC that's wired and on the same connectiont? We need the test to be as accurate as possible.

  • Yo,

I had packet loss issues in about every 5th game for months and I tried everything on EAs guide, nothing worked. Now I found out that my modem router device did not have the current firmware. It is set to automatic updating but for some reason, it didn't update. After updating it manually I do not experience packet loss anymore. I can only imagine that the older firmware has caused a vectoring problem (no idea, just a wild guess).

When i think back to when the problems started (I stopped playing for months) it pretty much coincides with the date of the firmware update.

So everyone with packet loss....check your firmware on your modem router.

    Good Luck
