Game + PC crashing, GPU and CPU @ max usage

Hey guys, I've had some issues with crashing. Initially, I was experiencing issues with running the game fullscreen, and would crash with the error message of: Engine Error - 0x887A0006 - DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is an design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed. After investigating fixes for that on other threads, I just disabled fullscreen, swapped to windowed borderless, and stop encountering that specific error. However, after switching I started having different issues. When I'm tabbed into the game, while I'm in lobby or in a match, both my CPU and GPU are being maxed by the process regardless of the area I'm in. This has lead to crashing with no error message, or my entire computer crashing. I've followed the crashing troubleshoot thread, and read through a lot of threads with similar issues, but none of the solutions I've found have worked.

This issue occurred as of today, with no windows updates, or further driver updates, and was running perfectly fine last night in both fullscreen and borderless windowed mode. I also haven't experienced any issues with other games as well.

PC specs:

OS: Windows 10 Pro Build 17134

Motherboard: MS-7917 ( MSI Z97 GAMING 5 )

Intel(R) Core i7-4790 CPU @ 4.00 GHz

32 GB RAM

NVIDIA GTX 980

If I overlooked anything else that's relevant, let me know and I'll post those as well.

Further details: All of my in game settings are minimum, and I've capped my fps via the launcher. My temperature has been fine, I've attempted to verify the game files, and reinstall the game with no success. I do have the Killer E2200 Gigabit Ethernet Controller network card, but no control center or anything else killer related. My confusion mainly stems from the fact that I've been running the game with no issues for 120 hours prior to this issue. Sorry for the lengthy post, I just wanted to make sure I included enough details because I'm very confused as to what the issue is and how to proceed with a fix.

Hey @MASSIVESTRENGTH the error you are seeing is one relating to your GPU, the best thing to do is a clean install of your GPU drivers.

You also need to ensure that you:

    • Turn on vsync
    • Perform a clean bootbefore attemting to play the game
    • Ensure you have power supply capable of meeting the demands of your hardware while it is under heavy gaming load
    • Set all in game graphics settings to low in order to reduce the stress on your GPU.
    • Set the high performance preset in your GPU control panel, as opposed to the high quality preset.
    • Run your video card at stock speeds (memory and core). This is also important for players with factory overclocked cards. This will require some third party software such as EVGA Precision or MSI Afterburner etc.

You can also try rolling back your drivers to an older release.

  • Haven't had any success with any of your suggestions unfortunately. I hadn't tried a clean boot or install yet, but even on a clean boot, and a clean install of my drivers, I was still experiencing the same problem.

  • I've got the same issue. As soon as I launch the game, my CPU takes off like a rocket, and hovers between 90-100% usage. Capping FPS at 90 will make it only use 80-90%, which is still laughably awful. Seems like the game has a leak somewhere.

Downgrade your Nvidia driver to 417.71

This is seems to be a common problem. A lot of people had the same issu and this method worked for me too.

btw I'm running 4770k 4.1GHz+RTX2070 and my frame rate is around 130-160 with low settings. GPU and CPU usage is prettymuch 90% the entire time so I guess its just that this game eats up as much power as it has. I might have to upgrade my cpu to get a more stable framerate.

  • Downgrading to 417.71 didn't seem to work for me :/ I've downgraded to a couple other previous builds too without much luck.
