Figured I'd come back and post my finding just in case someone else has a similar issue. First, I discovered that I experienced the issue with other steam games once I had installed some more and tried them out. That told me it was something happening when launching a game on Steam. I installed a few non-steam games to be sure and did not experience the issue.
The obvious fix was to disable Steam's in-game overlay and it worked. Haven't had any issues since disabling it.
