How to get stable FPS with my config [Lenovo Legion Y520-15IKBN]

Hello!

From my first match I have fallen in love with Apex Legends. After a while I understood that in this game speed, smoothness and high precision in ultra fast combat style is so important. So I started to think about making the game run as smooth as possible, tried some cfgs, some changes in videoconfig.txt to make my game run more smoothly and maybe I broke smth because before I started to make those changes I didn't check my FPS and I think that game was running better (also after I started doing those changes I cannot switch Model Detail from Low to any other option)....
After then whatever graphics I put i cannot find balance. My FPS ranges from 140 FPS to 30 FPS. Checked by NZXT CAM and some other software, also I checked in game ovelray (origin) and ofc I see that sometimes there are some drops.
I would love to have stable 60 FPS at least. I hope it is possible with my laptop. What may cause those drops? What may I do to fix it. (don't tell me things like "reinstall plz...") I hope some1 will help me with my problem.
FPS drops are almost always when I am entering buildings
Full specs:

PS: Game is at HDD I'll change it to SSD tomorrow and one more thing that when I play CPU and GPU temperatures are pretty high. from 50 to even 90 celsius. Also I'll attempt to clean system from malware and other crap.

PS2: I run Windows 10 and all my drivers are up to date.

  • Cleaning your system doesn't lower temperatures I think you need to learn a little more. Your system can run this game quite nicely however it is extremely prone to overheating I would set your game back to default turn the settings low and cap the framerate. Make sure your laptops ventilation is not obstructed in any way. When your computer overheats it throttles itself and these are likely the stutters and hitches and frame drops you are noticing.
  • Hey,
Thanks for answer but I've never had problems with overheating in other new games, also after your answer i made sure that everything i could to make my laptop have good ventilation. I'll also try to buy some kind of outside ventilation for it.

On the other hand. How to make game back to its all default configs?
Should i reinstall or just "back to default" in game or maybe repair in origin?

Hey @UnToxic Thanks for the breakdown, adding more ram would always be helpful to 16 gibs but that should not change the drop of FPS as you're describing it. 🙂

When playing can you have taskbar out and see what's causing the drop if its CPU or anything else spiking to 100%.

Since around the beginning of February I've been getting fps drops from a normal 60 to under 10 fps. It happens randomly but it is really emphasized in fights which makes it impossible to aim and the very game unplayable. I've tried many fixes [and yes I've read EA's crash guide with a lot of points which I've tried and none worked because those are crash related (along with tons of other threads)...] including:

Also, I've noticed that my GPU usage drops from around 80-90% down to below 10% while the fps drops are happening.

    Everything is on Low settings.

Other games like Rainbow Six Siege, Star Wars: Battlefront II and League of Legends work perfectly fine.

So far I've found absolutely no fixes whatsoever online that even barely helped me...

    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I've noticed the same thing and it started this season. I frequently have my game drop down to sub 30, sub 20 frames per second after being in the 100+ range. I assume it's not lag or connection related since I don't get any of the relevant icons about latency or congestion. Dropped the in-game graphics settings for most things to low and that didn't help. Frustrating as it makes the game unplayable at some points almost every match.

  • I also had severe fps drops in all the games before downgrading my graphics card drivers and cleaning. Try to reinstal your graphics card drivers to the ones that are displayed on lenovo website, not to the newest ones. And in general try only those drivers.Cleaning up dust and changing the thermal paste helps with temperatures. I have the same pc but mine is a bit older with i5-7300hq @ 2.5GHz and GTX1050 - the reguillar one, and on low settings the game runs quite stable and only in some places or fast fights it dips below 60fps.
