Screen resolution changing automatically refresh rate limited to 50 Hz

Since I couldn't solve it, I'll post it.

So my computer is an MSI laptop (with 120 Hz screen), then I also have an MSI monitor where I play. My monitor is an Ultra Wide Full HD (3440 x 1440).

I don't have any type of issues ever, but just on EA games, Apex and FIFA 21 I find this limitation with the refresh rate.

So my monitor has 120 Hz, for example: CS:GO, overwatch, smite, paladins, etc. Have no issues running full screen.

The thing is, even when my monitor supports up to 144 Hz, if I play at 3440 x 1440 with my computer it will run at 50 Hz.

That's why I changed to the native resolution to 1920x1080, so I can have this 120 Hz on my screen. Don't ask me why but, EA games like Apex or Fifa21, I click on my monitor settings (physical button) and I can see that they appear to launch at 3440x1440 and that means that it's only going to be on only 50 Hz and I lose 70 Hz (I'm really not used to playing a 50 refresh rate, it's laggy for me). I already checked video settings in-game, also Nvidia GeForce, say that's "1920x1080", but it's clearly on "3440x1440". If I go window mode it will change, but obviously losing too much on the time response and performance

I also tried checking from Nvidia control, but since a laptop seems like the feature doesn't appear.

Does anyone have an idea on how to change the resolution on the Game files of Apex Legends?

Any suggestion is appreciated. I already contacted EA support, but... we literally did nothing.

  • Hi! first of all, please make your external monitor the MAIN monitor in windows display settings. and Nvidia control panel should always be present unless you are using DCH drivers. try uninstalling the present driver and install the newest WHQL version of your video driver.

  • Also, you can try using command-line arguments like -freq 120 -fullscreen -w 3440 -h 1440

    Hey thanks for your contribution.

I have set only the external monitor as my screen, so the option of "main monitor", is already set when connecting on this mode.

About the drivers, I have the drivers 630 intel (integrated graphic) and also the latest version for my Nvidia 1050ti. Maybe the option doesn't appear because of that.

I was thinking of something else to change the file settings to force the resolution. I'm downloading origin, and I'll check the commands you listed.

    Thanks again for your contribution

  • Do u solve this problem??! I have an ultra wide that auto defaults to full screening the entire screen even when changing desktop res and lowering in game res and everything!! And it won't let me use custom resolution utility!!
