Sudden Disconnect Then Abandonment Penalty

While this has only happened to me once (Xbox Series X), my friends on PlayStation (one on 4 and the other on 5) are experiencing this issue more frequently than I am. Whilst trying to play ranked, I had a lag spike where every single connection symbol popped up. I didn't think much of it until I heard my friend say "It just-" and the other said "Me too." I checked and they had both been kicked from the game. My friend had immediately sent me an image via iMessage (using their Wi-Fi, not cellular data) and it showed the error message reading "ERROR: Could not rejoin match. It may have ended (code: over)." The game had not ended because I was still in the game. This seemed to have happened to others in the game too because once they disconnected, before they turned into death boxes, I checked the number of squads left and there were 11 squads (25 players) remaining. There were just 13 squads (37 players) prior to this disconnect in the game and the kill feed was not full or moving. Once I was killed, I noticed that the other person who killed me who was also on Xbox was another solo, with no teammates at all (teammates were not timed out or waiting to be respawned; a full disconnect showing what you would see when someone leaves a casual match). Once my friends both got on, it had shown that they had received an abandonment penalty and I was placed 11th so I went negative. I do not think it is feasibly possible that a minimum of 12 people in the game experienced a connection issue that warranted them to all disconnect like this. If anyone can answer these questions, it would be appreciated.

Questions: 

1) Is this an internal (developer side) issue, external (ddosing), or a console specific issue?

2) Has this been officially acknowledged and is it going to be fixed soon?

3) Is there an estimated time for when we could expect a fix?
