Unable to crossplay between PS4 and Switch

I'm unable to friend or play games with my son - it worked in season 9 but stopped since season 10. My son plays on Switch, and I play on PS4. We played a few games together in season 9, but since season 10 things have not been working. He's 6 so I thought it was an age issue, but it worked in season 9 (his Switch profile is linked to his birthday). We don't appear in each other's friends list, if he searches for me on his Switch he can find me and send a friend request but I never receive it on the PS4 (I have not tried the other way around because there are several duplicates of his name he set up so I don't know which is his). I've tried working with online chat and they are not helpful. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what could be causing this? When pulling up the friends list/screen on his Switch, there is a message at the bottom stating "One or more of the privacy settings on your EA account may be limiting other players' ability to send you friend or club invites". I'm going to reveal how new we both are by saying we are both not level 10 yet, so I have not tried the work around of creating a club and having him join or vice versa.
