Battlefield 6 beta feedback from a 20 year veteran player.
Bugs and polish stuff aside, I have a few actual gripes. Some might be alleviated when the full game launches and there’s more gadgets to use. Still, let me explain. I’ve played the beta for almost 45 hours.
- The most important thing first. WE ABSOLUTELY NEED PERSISTENT SERVERS. The gameplay of BF6 is fantastic. Graphics are great, performance is great, etc. but way too many times in this beta I would play breakthrough and I would be stuck in the same map, on the same side. 4 times in a ROW I had to defend on Liberation Peak. Persistent servers would be the same as past BF games (prior to 2042). You and your lobby will continue on to the next map together, and in BF1 you could even vote on the next map as a full lobby! That would completely ELIMINATE the risk of playing the same map again. There is no reason after a match ends that you should have to queue all over again for, potentially, several minutes when YOU ALREADY HAVE A FULL LOBBY YOU JUST PLAYED IN. It’s completely unnecessary and a HUGE step back from the BF3/BF4/BF1 and BFV days. No idea why you guys keep pushing this. For some reason, I see almost no one talking about it. You guys had this figured out for over a decade now and all the sudden, you change it to make it WAY worse. Half a billion in budget and you can’t do something you did 14 years ago? Come on.
- As is right now, Assault class is very weak. In the beta, you’re forced to take an extra primary (shotgun, dmr, or carbine), and that cuts your ammo in half. Your assault rifle has significantly less ammo and I run out extremely quick with how chaotic gameplay is. The grenade launcher is nice, but you also run out quick and you have to lay next to an ammo box for what feels like minutes to fill back up. And with unlocked weapons, you might as well use an assault rifle with another class to get full ammo. However, I suspect this will be resolved in the full game when you can choose another gadget instead of another primary. Still, as is it’s almost useless.
- Large maps are a staple of Battlefield, and all-out warfare with infantry and vehicles is completely encased in the DNA of the brand. Would be great to see larger maps in the future. BF6 is shipping with similar sized maps to BF3, but hopefully the expansions will focus more on large maps.
- Even though I’m happy with the overall map layout so far, I do have some notes for Siege of Cairo. People have been on the roofs in the out of bounds region. Why not open that area up with staircases and ladders? Add small bridges of scrap metal connecting some buildings over streets and alleys (similar to Flood Zone from BF4), and to combat the infantry up there, give each team a Little Bird. It expands the map size (vertically), adds more interesting flank routes and stories for players to tell, and adds more highlight on the criminally underrated Little Bird. I think that would greatly improve an already awesome map.
- Anti air is SIGNIFICANTLY overpowered. As a pilot, you have to deal with enemy aircraft, anti air emplacements, anti air tanks, and stingers from infantry. All you have to combat this is a flare, and it takes a while to get it back. You get targeted instantly by multiple enemies. Flare the first rocket, then you’re **bleep**ed by the second. I get they shouldn’t be overpowered and dominating the battlefield, but for gods sake it’s virtually impossible to survive more than 60 seconds. And those stingers lock on across the entire map. Needs some serious balancing.
- Unlocked weapons aren’t as bad as I thought they would be since they’re giving incentives to use signature weapons of the class. From my personal experience, most classes DO use the signature weapons. However, I DO think they should lock them permanently. Leave dmr’s, shotguns, and carbines open to everyone, but lock AR’s, SMG’s, LMG’s, and sniper rifles. The closed weapons playlist makes the team play much better, and it would help the game significantly.
- I’d like to see some new UI implemented. The skull that pops up on screen when you get a kill, and sounds for hit markers and kills are the same as 2042. Remove anything even remotely related to 2042. I don’t want to play the best BF game in nearly a decade just to be reminded of the worst one anytime anything happens. 2042 was a blight on the franchise, and one of the worst FPS games I’ve ever played. BF6 shouldn’t have to share that burden in anyway, because what you guys are building here is seriously fantastic. BF6 has a great foundation and great bones for the future of the franchise. Make these changes I’ve laid out here (among others from other submissions) and you will WITHOUT A DOUBT have the best BF game ever made.
I’ve been playing this franchise for nearly 20 years. Hundreds of hours in all BF games since 2. Thousands of hours in BF3/BF4/BF1 and BF5. This is the first Battlefield game since 1 that I truly believe is great, top to bottom. Just a few changes and balances here and there. I didn’t give feedback on the 2042 beta because that game was a lost cause. BF6 is NOT like that. This truly has the potential to be the best Battlefield game of all time. THAT’S why I care so much this time around. Please, DICE. Please, EA. If you listen and make some minor changes here and there, you WILL be rewarded. People will buy. People will play. And people will stay. For the love of god I love this franchise way too much to see it die by negligence from a company that has the money to change it. Make these changes, I’ll pre-order TODAY.
