The problem is that the vehicle reticles are tied to the hip fire crosshair, which is disabled by the hardcore mode. I set up a custom portal server with just that one setting left on and it fixed the hud. IMO the best solution here is to have vehicle and infantry crosshair as separate things, maybe somene can figure out how to do that with the SDK.
