Let's Talk Sniper Glint Below 5x Scopes

The Problem

I was playing earlier today and got shot pretty handily by another sniper I was battling, through black smoke on Blackwell, trying to countersnipe. The sniper had their own glint. But, I have been running around with a 1-4x scope.

And apparently, my 1-4x had glint.

This is a pretty significant change from the other Battlefield games I did recon in (mostly 3 & 4) where sniper scope glint was only on scopes that were powerful in magnification-- 5x and above. Even in 2042, glint was up above 3.5x.

I worked with the person I had been fighting on the other team, swapped to a 2x scope and discovered that even this scope had glint on it.

The Past

I always felt like anything 4x and below didn't deserve to have glint because it introduced a good balance. There was some sacrifice in effective range that would be rewarded if you knew how to work with a scope that didn't have mil lines or dots. And even then, you're mostly landing body shots which are survivable.

It serves as long range suppression, and does a great job of rewarding combat at medium ranges with an understanding that your rate of fire often meant you had to be selective of how you engaged in combat, and with whom (both friendlies and enemies).

The Balance

It seems a bit unfair to have glint present for scopes like this on sniper rifles, when DMR and even single-fire mode rifles can have some mid-range stopping and suppression power. So, I want to shift that.

I want to advocate for two things that, I feel, are a good balance in the quality of life for sniping while positively changing the dynamics of mid-range sniping in the game:

  • Remove sniper glint for 4x and below
  • Limit the ranger accessory to anything 5x and above, to prevent auto ranging for lower powered scopes and throwing things out of balance.
    • This prevents a 4x scope from being attached and increasing the chance of headshots without aiming upward as needed for range.
  • Alternatively, the glint reduction accessory for the scope should eliminate the glint at 4x and below completely, making it something to work toward. Though, I would prefer an outright removal.

Good to have confirmation. Already switch my M2010 recon build to a Shotgun; SVK will be my long-range weapon from now on (pretty much had been anyway).

We did test this in game, and there was no glint off iron sights.

I might have uninstalled if there was.

Reddit has tested this issue and they say, and I agree, that DMR weapons have no glint at all. Nor do any other weapons except sniper rifles.

This means that, the SVK (and other DMR weapons) with a long scope and suppressor will be virtually undetectable.

The only thing that you may want to do for stability (since only the sniper rifles are used with steady aim) is to put the bipod on the weapon to stop the movement.

The SVK is a hard-hitting, long range semi-automatic and for all intents and purposes it is a sniper rifle. A very good weapon and it will have no scope glint.

You will notice, for example, that only sniper rifles will have the Anti-Glare optic accessory. And they are the only ones that need it.

One other point, I recently received the Mini Scout "Golden Valor" rifle. Not only is it beautiful with lots of gold highlights but it will reload a shell almost as rapidly as a semi-auto rifle while looking down the scope.

If you miss the headshot, you will be able to do several follow-up shots rapidly. It does have scope glint therefore you should use the anti-glare optic with it but for some reason that I don't understand the rifle seems to mostly go unnoticed by other snipers. At least it seems so to me.

Can you test DMRs...I'll just hang up my M2010 if it always has glint and only use my SVK if it doesn't.

  • I was going to test iron sights today, that would be absolutely ludicrous iron sights have glint.

  • Listening to various content creators, I am under the impression that all sniper scopes (even iron sights) produce scope glint.

Oh crap. I thought the 4x and lower had no glint. I use SVK and M2010, both suppressed, and both with 4x Scope (and canted irons for close range) for midrange combat (I don't snipe, but will counter-snipe if it helps cap a point).

I always thought it was weird how I could fire a shot, then enemies would immediately turn and start shooting at me; must be catching the glint.

  • I wonder if that was me as I had been doing this exact same thing on that map, if your ingame name is papayyyyye ?
I got a headshot at 634m through black smoke I was using for cover & the enemy could definitely see my 5x scope glint.
I was zeroed at 100m and was using the scopes reticle for ranging, not the range finder, yuk.
I too had been wondering about the glint on 4x scope & below, so I tested it, I was using a 4x acog scope on a DMR & the enemy snipers could definitely see the glint on that.

Imagine if you had the sun to your back which eliminated glint, now that would be a great mechanic.

Also what about real world scopes that have a honeycomb anti-glare device (ARD) or "kill flash" to prevent light reflection., shouldn't that be a thing in the game too ?

I think what you are saying would be a good balance.
