Mortars

Mortars are becoming a pain with unrelenting fire. But as most people know it is so unrealistic and impossible to fire a mortar continuously. Every other weapon in the game that has unlimited ammo eg mg on a tank, has a cooldown so why not do the same thing with the mortar. Fire 6 mortar rounds then have a cool down then you can fire another 6. The cooldown period can be a way of mortar teams working together to alternate firing to cover the cooldown.

I'm sure you are technically correct, but I had to say I have NEVER scored a kill with a mortar.

I think in bf4 they had set ammo and you had to get off and get more from your bag but it's been years since I played so maybe I'm wrong.

  • Tested it yesterday, and played 2 games of Breakthrough only spamming the Mortar. Got 6 kills on Blackwell Fields and 10 kills on Contaminated. Not as overpowered as I thought, and you get very little XP. Probably will not use it again.

Yeah it only becomes a problem when 3-4+ people use them and ya just look up and its  raining explosives lol. Mine rarely go where i want it to.

  • I've played the Operations mode 2x and dropped because of mortars. I'm not against people using it, for the equipment it is,  it has its advantages and limitations.

What I rant about it is there is no way to counter how it is now. There has to be a way to counter everything in the game. If a player or 5 players can sit in the HQ and spawn mortars, and the defending team cannot counter, is not ok. Before, you risk a position and try to snipe the mortar operator, or kill him with a drone. Now, they are touchless. People who know how to play won't let a sniper too close and won't let a drone fly too much time, so it was ok, I guess. Now, we can do nothing to counter mortar teams.

  • Individually they are aren't that effective and more just a nuisance, but as mentioned if you get 2-3-4 players just spamming mortars than some areas can become untenable, which I guess is the point. Possibly be better if you only had half a dozen rounds to spam and then a longer cool down.  No one should be able to spam from a HQ zone and be invincible to counter mortar fire though

  • IMO to make mortars less of a pain on both sides, they should overheat like LMGs do. Realistically the mortar tube gets hot after so many rounds (see movie "We were soldiers" where they pee on them to cool them off). If the support player can just spam rounds without consequence we get what we have. Add in a cool down period and fire is less oppressive and does not shut down a given area. Even multiple mortars would be less painful to play against if it stays how it is being able to rain shells from spawn and immune to countering except by another mortar.

Either go back to preventing them from deploying in spawn (mainly so drones can take them out) or add in a cool down or overheat mechanic.
