BF1 occasionally freezes entire PC

As the title says, occasionally when I play BF1, the game slows down visibly almost to a freeze. This slowing down is applied to the entire computer, and actually closing the game doesn't resolve the issue. I have to reboot my entire PC for it to run normally again.

It's not a big problem, as it occurs say only once a month, but it is odd. My PC's fans don't speed up, and BF1 is the only application this happens with. This and the fact that closing the game doesn't fix it, makes me think that it is anti-cheat related.

Anybody out there with the same issue, and perhaps with a solution?

My PC's specs are:

  • CPU: AMD 7600x3D
  • Mobo: MSI Tomahawk B650
  • DRAM: Corsair 32 GB 6000 Mhz DDR5 Expo
  • GPU: RTX 5070 12GB (drivers up to date)
  • PSU: NZXT gold 3.1 850W
  • SSD: (2x) Samsung 990 Pro 1TB NVMe
  • Display: (2x) 24" Iiyama 1080p
  • OS: Windows 11 Home (& Linux Mint on 2nd NVMe), Secure Boot enabled on both OS's

The fact that you mention it might be related to the anti-cheat update is interesting. I'll try that.

Since the black screen on intro video is easy to reproduce, we should be able to test that quite easily.

Done that, and I don't play BF1 with Brave running in the background anymore. Black screen on intro video still occurs, and does so consistently.

Base Windows 11 (offline account, all sync settings off) + Samsung Magician for the NVMe's. Internet is via ethernet cable. No error message.

  • I had this issue too, switching to DirectX11 fixed my issue completely. I think when EA updated their anticheat last year, they broke DirectX12 for BF1 which was experimental in the first place.

    Hi Wasserblaffer

Thanks for the additional details. This may be difficult to pinpoint, as similar freezes also happen outside BF1. Since it only occurs on Windows, it could be related to a driver, hardware acceleration, or another software conflict. A clean NVIDIA driver installation and disabling hardware acceleration in Brave may help narrow it down.

What have you got running in the background, are you on WI FI, are you sharing internet connection, do you get an error message (there is always an error message if it is MS related).

    Stuff like that to check.

    Hello EA_cuervo,

Thank you for replying. To be honest, I haven´t had this issue since, however some performance issues remain:

    1. Occassional FPS drops
    2. Similar PC freezes as before when running other applications (e.g. Brave browser)
    3. When Alt-tabbing during Operations matchmaking, the game becomes unresponsive as the campaigns intro videos load. The narration can be heard, but the screen remains black, doesn´t progress, and doesn´t respond to keyboard input (incl. the usual press and hold to 'skip')

I am wondering whether the 1.st is caused server side.

    2. and 3. might be related though, and also another form of the same issue as before. I often use Brave to watch videos as well. I am wondering if there is something with the NVIDIA drivers that causes hardware acceleration issue with video playback. On Linux, on the same machine, I don´t have such issues at all, so the hardware can be ruled out.
