Downloading "Jade Empire: Special Edition" fails without fail

Dear EA forums users,

I turn to you for aid in this endeavour:
Upon each attempt to download and install the above-mentioned game, the EA app initiates a process of "preparing" that lasts about a minute. Subsequently, we are informed that there has been a "⚠ Download error" which terminates the (0% complete) download process.

This peculiar behaviour remains consistent over subsequent attempts. Attempts to influence said behaviour by re-installing the app have, so far, been unsuccessful. Changing the installation directory and clearing the cache have been similarly unfruitful.

Thus, I hope to draw upon the wisdom of the crowd and upon the expertise of EA staffers in divining the workings of this piece of software, doubtlessly crafted by one of their (distant) colleagues within the span of a weekend who were subsequently let go because they were costing money and – obviously – no longer needed.
