ea desktop just uninstalled origin without giving me any say
the title explains the what. how it happened started saturday evening when my D: drive just died. irrecoverable. since the C: is a small SSD mainly for windows, it meant all my game launchers like origin, EA Desktop beta, steam, ubisoft connect, battle.net AND all the games on the D: drive were gone. couldnt even recognise the hd as a device in windows so no chance to copy the contents off.
i had to spend nearly £100 on a replacement to arrive next day after much troubleshooting to confirm it was totally dead, and since then i have been awake initialising, formatting, setting up folder structures, and installing all the game launcher/storefronts and then redownloading games. so far i had skipped EA desktop, just making sure origin was installed and downloaded fifa 22 which i planned later today to test to make sure everything actually is working and see if the saved career mode games are still okay.
but i have gotten in the habit of launching fifa from destop app not origin. it seems simpler and quicker. so i wanted to reinstall it.
however: one of the side effects of the D: drive dying but windoze 10 being fine is that windows still thought all the shortcuts on desktop pointed to still existing installs. such as when i tried to install EA desktop. the registry is probably full of junk i need to manually find (WARNING: this is not recommended for anyone to do and you can kill your OS very easily unless you know exactly what you are doing. please dont mess around in there).
but the upshot is, the installer said 'EA Desktop is already installed' and only offered me to repair.
i let it. oops.
it seemed to go fine until i suddenly saw it, without asking me first, say 'uninstalling origin'.
why is this bad? because only origin shows all your games. ea desktop shows only the most recent shiny expensive games. they dont want you buying or playing old ones. i guess with the coming switch a lot of us will find we cant install older games anymore like fifa 17 (keep it for the journey part 1 which i enjoy sometimes).
WORSE: i prebought fifa23 since its the last fifa game before the new and not improved 'EA did it our own USA way now soccer fan game'. EA Desktop doesnt acknowledge that exists for me in collections so i would have no way to preload in september without origin.
so what do i want? REMOVE the auto uninstall 'feature' when EA Desktop is repaired or installed. i want a choice of whether to run both or just origin. this cant be a bug its too smooth in the repair process. it is VERY bad treatment of your paying customers to not provide a yes no question 'do you want to uninstall origin?' to which i can then say 'NO NEVER'. the options for EA Desktop are clearly irrelevant to most players and just there for corporate show, since they dont come near to functioning to give people control.
if you insist on making a beta that wont display ALL the games i own for no good reason (it actually stopped showing madden 21 recently even when it was installed, i had to play that from origin anyway), wont display content to come that is PAID for in advance to allow peace of mind it is still acknowledged and will be preloadable in advance, wont provide proper options in the installer even to stop unwanted behaviour such as uninstalling another game launcher, then what is the point of it? youd be better off firing the team brute forcing customers to do what THEY want not what the customer wants, and where will that go if not challenged? will you begin uninstalling steam to try to force people only to buy EA games on desktop app? will you uninstall other competitor launchers and storefronts because you dont sell games on them at all, without doing more than tell the user youre doing so as they install your beta app?
this behaviour is unacceptable. fix it, or i wont bother moving to it when its finally ready to release (looks like its aimed at phone users not pc gamer users anyway),
