Mass Effect Legendary Edition: An Incompatible Version Is Installed

For the past few days, I have been trying to play Mass Effect Legendary Edition through Steam. Every time I try to launch the game, the EA App opens and gives me the error message "Couldn't launch Mass Effect Legendary Edition. An incompatible version of this game is installed on your device. Uninstall the Steam version to launch."

If I don't try to launch the game through Steam, and pull up my library in the EA App, the game is greyed out and says to uninstall the EA version of the game. I have no idea what to do here. I've already uninstalled the Steam version twice, and I can't find any EA version of the game on my device to uninstall. I even deleted all of my save data for the game and that did nothing. I've uninstalled the EA App several times as well (a solution that worked when I was having problems with Dragon Age: Inquisition).

This is frankly infuriating. Why would I ever buy another EA product if I have to go on a days long quest every time I want to play one of their games?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hey @KoolPandaz when you uninstall the EA app do you reinstall it or let it install when launching game?

    Darko

  • I should also add that several years ago I had the game installed through Xbox Gamepass, but I uninstalled all of that when I acquired it through Steam. I didn't have any trouble playing it through Steam in the past. I also don't have any mods installed.

In your task manager @KoolPandaz close EA and EA background service and then open the EA app before opening and launching the game in Steam.

  • @EA_Darko I closed the EA app and background services through task manager, I also completely closed Steam that way. I opened the EA app, then opened Steam and attempted to launch the game. I got a slightly different error report this time, but the game still did not launch.

  • I have the same problem. I also have xbox gamepass LE version installed at the same time.

    @KoolPandaz

    Please clear your temp files:

    • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time
    • Into the new window, type or copy & paste:  "%temp%"   (Without the quotes.) > hit "ENTER"
    • Now your Windows Explorer should have brought you to the "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Local\Temp" folder. > Delete all files and folders in it.
(If some files or folders can't be deleted, reboot and try again.)

    Then:

    • Go here and download "Revo Uninstaller". (The freeware version, Portable version works too.)
    • Run "Revo Uninstaller" > Uninstall EA app.
    • At the end of the main uninstall, Revo will ask you which cleaning method you want to use. > Select "Advanced" > Browse.
    • If "Remaining registration content found" is displayed > Select All > Delete > Next
    • When "Remaining Data and Folders" is displayed > Select All (Make sure the "Origin Games" or EA Games folder is not in the list) > Delete.
    • Restart the PC > Reinstall the newest version of EA app from here.
    • Test.
