10+ Years Delay Issue – Found UDP Packet Size Problem via Wireshark

Hi,

I'm playing EA FC25 from Israel and I've been experiencing serious delay issues for years – ever since FIFA 12.

Back then I didn’t understand the cause of the problem. I thought it was just how online gameplay feels, but something always felt wrong: my players were slow, delayed, and unresponsive compared to others.

Out of frustration, I quit the game and stopped playing FIFA for years.

Two weeks ago, I decided to come back and try again with FC25 – and sadly, the exact same issue is still happening. But this time I started deep technical analysis using Wireshark, and I finally found something concrete:

🔎 My UDP packet sizes are **abnormally small** – average of 103 bytes, sometimes as low as 40–70 bytes.

According to network standards and several sources, EA’s game normally uses **~1024 byte** UDP packets for optimal online gameplay. The difference in packet size clearly affects real-time responsiveness.

When I tested with a mobile hotspot or using remote play via a friend's console – the packet sizes were significantly larger (~800–1300 bytes), and the gameplay was noticeably smoother.

I’ve ruled out everything on my side:
- Tried multiple ISPs (same problem)
- Replaced routers, cables, used direct PPPoE
- No packet loss, no jitter
- No background traffic
- Used ExitLag and GearUP Booster – no consistent improvement
- DNS tested: 1.1.1.1 / 8.8.8.8
- MTU values confirmed

It’s clear that something in the routing or ISP handling is **fragmenting or shrinking** the UDP packets between my console and EA servers.

This issue is regional and persistent for over a decade.

🧾 I have **full evidence** to prove this – including:
- Multiple full Wireshark captures
- UDP packet size breakdown
- Graphs comparing good vs bad gameplay
- Server IPs and connection quality

Please escalate this to your network engineering team. I’m willing to provide everything required. After more than 10 years of trying, I just want to enjoy the game like everyone else.

Thank you.

  • Good luck to you. When I proved that packet loss issues were on EA's end, they locked down the thread. Hopefully they engage with you a bit more than they did me.

    Hi, thank you for replying!

I wanted to ask you a few things:

    • How long have you been experiencing this issue?
    • Where are you located?
    • Did you ever send EA an official email or ticket about it?
    • Did anyone from support actually try to help you?
    • And what’s your usual ping during online matches?

I’m trying to gather more info from others with the same problem so we can push EA to really investigate this.

    No worries!

    • I only started playing around TOTY, but it was straight after that and has gradually gotten worse until I stopped playing during TOTS.
    • I am in the UK.
    • I've been in many discussions with EA staff about this issue.
    • They asked me for the connection report test result, then they blamed my ISP, even though I have no issues with my network outside of FC25. Even FC24 runs like a dream in comparison.
    • My ping varies, dependant on who I get matched with, but it's usually 12-25ms.

I admire your enthusiasm and hope you manage to get some support.

  • If you had problems on older fifas this would point to your isp. It wasn’t severs back then and it was p2p. So if you had issues back then it was your connection. That’s why you used to get that start stop lag. You no longer get that now that it’s on servers. You are no longer dependent on the other persons connection.

You are just willfully ignorant at this point. You did not read, or do not understand what OP has said. Now, squirrel yourself away up EA's arse, please.

  • Please don’t be rude. I did read what he said. He had issues before servers which would indicate his isp. Much like your issue as ea said it was your isp.

But here op test your connection with the link below. Also in game turn on the online input overlay. This will show you two controllers one is your local and one is connected to the severs on screen. Push a button or move the stick and count how in sync or out of sync your controllers are. If you can count say 4 seconds then you have massive delay.

But yeah if you post your connection report and video showing delay I hope ea goes over it much like they did with beridan.

Ahhh, so he's had issues with other fifas, so it must be his ISP, but I have not, so it must be my ISP. I get it. This makes sense. You are very helpful.

  • Well if he had the issue before the servers yes. If he had said he didn’t experience it in the older fifas this would suggest he had the better connection.

But that’s just a guess. I gave him the link to test his connection. I also explained how he can take a video and show the delay.

Unless he posts those it’s just a guess. I also said I hope they diagnose his connection like they did yours.

Has there been server issues that are eas fault yes. Can it also be someone’s isp yes. The only way to know is after he does the above.

I realize there are a lot of people on here that are biased and only blame ea or someone’s isp but that’s not me.
