Feedback and Concerns Regarding Core Gameplay Mechanics and AI in EA Sports FC
I am writing to provide constructive feedback from the perspective of a dedicated, long-time fan of the franchise (a supporter since the FIFA 96 era) regarding the current state of EA Sports FC. While I appreciate the ongoing efforts to evolve the game, I feel that the current direction has compromised gameplay realism, tactical depth, and my overall user satisfaction. The focus on randomness and certain "meta" mechanics over consistent skill execution has resulted in a frustrating and often unfulfilling experience for me personally.
Here are the primary issues that I believe need attention:
1.Prioritizing Skill Execution over Randomness
The game currently feels as though a "randomness generator" heavily influences outcomes, which often undermines my own user skill. This creates frustration when:
- Errant Touches & Poor Fluidity: My players frequently take poor first touches, particularly in the penalty area, disrupting fluid attacks and limiting my ability to dribble effectively.
- Unreliable Passing: Passes intended to be precise often go astray to a defender, even when my user input seems correct. The outcome feels scripted rather than a result of my execution or player stats.
I advocate for a more consistent gameplay model where precise user input is consistently rewarded, and the better player wins based on execution, not random chance. I have found that adjusting the game sliders does not effectively mitigate these core physics issues
2. Realism in Mechanics
The reliance on a few specific mechanics feels unrealistic and dominates the gameplay "meta":
- Overpowered Shielding: Shielding the ball has become an ubiquitous tactic to navigate the box, which is not how professional football is played. Real-life box play is about rapid directional changes and quick cuts, which feel restricted in the current game.
- Lack of Manual Control: I often feel limited in my freedom to dribble or pass naturally, leading to clunky movements and a lack of the creative freedom that actual footballers possess.
3. AI Behavior
The AI's performance is often immersion-breaking and forces me to compensate for fundamental errors:
- Defensive Stagnation: My AI midfielders and defenders sometimes stand static as opponents run by, failing to track back effectively on defense and creating unrealistic gaps that are difficult to cover manually.
- Offside Awareness: My AI wingers and strikers make basic offside runs that lack situational awareness of the defensive line or the ball carrier's ability to play the pass. I believe the lack of detailed on- and off-ball tactical AI is a major weakness.
4. Tactical Depth
I feel the game has moved away from robust strategy. The absence of deep, customizable tactical systems and formations—along with a lack of dedicated on- and off-ball instructions—limits managerial creativity and forces all teams to play a similar, generic style online.
5. Scripted Moments and "Drama"
A major concern for me is the perceived scripting or momentum swings that seem designed to force "drama" into matches, undermining fair play and user control. This is particularly evident in:
Kick-Off Goals: It frequently feels as though the defending AI is heavily nerfed immediately following a goal, making kick-off goals far too easy to concede or score.
Momentum Windows: There is a pervasive feeling that goals are statistically more likely to occur right around the 45-minute and 90-minute marks, regardless of the run of play, suggesting artificial manipulation of the game engine to force close finishes.
Conclusion:
I believe that addressing these core gameplay and AI issues, particularly the removal of artificial "drama" elements and the focus on consistent, skill-based mechanics, would significantly improve the overall experience. A focus on authenticity and rewarding user skill is crucial for the long-term health of the FC series.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my feedback.
Sincerely,
A Long-Time EA Sports FC Player - amnesty457
