Serious question about Manager Live

Is it my understanding that Manager Live challenges, tasks, and rewards will only be available if my manager career is connected to PSN, ie, not available in "manager original?" or manager career mode?

If yes, why are these challenges not randomly integrated into an offline mode?

All the new features and challenges seem cool, but if forced to be online that would seem like there is a data grab at play here.
