Why are match outcomes so unbalanced in terms of performance?

For instance, I might beat a 15-star opponent in Champion mode, but in the very next match, the automated gameplay makes it impossible for me to break through the defense of a 3-star player. I find myself slower than them throughout the match, even though their team is weaker in terms of OVR. My players just stand there when receiving the ball—giving the opponent's defenders time to step in or turn back—almost as if my own players are sabotaging my scoring chances. My shots hit the woodwork. The lag spikes dramatically when I shoot at the goal, while the opponent's defenders seem hyper-reactive compared to mine. I ask this based on experience: I’ve added countless such opponents as friends, and they remain at the same rank they were before, so it’s not a matter of equal skill levels. Is this caused by the automated defending and gameplay mechanics? I don't understand why my team (127 OVR) is competitive against similar opponents but falls behind against weaker ones. My ping is good—max 30–50ms.

The game is intentionally built his way because:

    1. To help everybody win as to keep lower skilled players playing the game
    2. Drive purchases when a losing streak makes you think your players are outdated
    3. Dramatic wins and losses trigger dopamine loops that keep players addicted to the game

Unfortunately, the game isn't built to be a great game and keep people happy. It's built to make money and keep making money.

  • Mate, I find it inconceivable that a Fernando Torres—a guy with no real track record—dribbles and scores more successfully than a Messi, Mbappé, or Son. Do matches really come down to signings? It’s disappointing; right now, you can’t really count on the players' real-world success translating into the game at all—take Lamine Yamal, for instance; what’s happening with him in the game is just ridiculous. In one match, the game pushes you forward and goal-scoring chances just fall into your lap; in the next, it does the same for the opponent. There is no middle ground based on actual skill—like who can pass better or create chances—because goals are born from the game manipulating the defenders: either holding them back or making them act against the opponent or against me. It feels pointless for anyone to actually try to play. AI assistance—that automatic gameplay aid—has ruined the experience over the past three months, and despite everyone pointing this out, they refuse to change it. Just imagine a player with mediocre stats facing someone with elite stats: the mediocre player scores three goals from completely random situations, while the elite player either takes too long to shoot from 100% chances, hits the post, or gets dispossessed from three meters out. I think this automatic gameplay mechanic has taken over to such an extent that the game has become unenjoyable. It’s 100% the cause of the goalkeeping issues and the uncontrollable defenders we’ve seen over the last 2–3 months. But it’s no use writing about it here; the feedback isn't being passed on that this system doesn't work—it doesn't enhance the experience, it destroys it. You can't find even ten minutes—let alone three matches—of a genuinely good gameplay experience anymore

Yeah, there’s a maddening degree of variability in player performance and user skill, ping, and squad composition just don’t seem to account for it. There are simply matches where my players’ performance dips inexplicably.

With in-app purchases driving FCM revenue, EA’s incentive structure certainly doesn’t align with what users most want — consistently excellent gameplay. Instead, the incentive is to make users feel enough distress that they spend more. And with EA’s sale to the Saudi’s now complete, the company is likely to become even more ruthless in chasing profit over playability.
