Swing Mechanics & the Aim Marker

The question was put to the developers over on Operation Sports and was clearly answered & confirmed that:-

‘Ultimately, we decided that allowing the aim marker to set the length of the swing, more closely aligns with how professional golfers are able to feel and judge distance.’

I would like to remain optimistic mate but that paragraph says it all.

The questions in that interview came from OS forum users. A thread was put out to submit questions for the EA Q&A interview so that’s what we did.

For transparency just a forum user not staff.

As Gasman1 already stated

The Devs were asked about this by OS staff and it seems clear just in their answer tone that it's the same 'ol, same 'ol on aiming, distance control via arrow, etc

Let's just hope this is more like TW14 (and other TW games) than Rory

It was almost like the game played for you and you just flicked the stick.

Why move the aim marker when it’s already going to get you inside 10 feet automatically?

In Rory, it seems they never programmed any variance to the shot.

No room for error.
Just perfect shots.

Go fire it up and don't even aim.. just swing..

You'll be shocked how well you score, even on the HIGHEST difficulty settings possible, by doing absolutely nothing other than swinging whatever the preset shot/aim is all the time.

14 has the issue where bunker and rough shots might as well be irrelevant because of the strike meter system. You could be buried in rough or bunker and hit shots out completely fine if you strike meter below the ball or just keep it center and suffer a barely any penalty lie if there is any. 

100% fair about bunkers on 14

I, by no means, think TW14 was the best anything could be..

I just don't want much of anything from Rory gameplay.

The user barely has to do anything and it's just auto-birdies all day long

To me it's not clear because they don't say how they are setting the length of the swing with the marker. Limiting the length of the swing would nullify the new overswing. That's why I could see them instead adjusting the target line on the swing arc, or length of the arc with the marker, which would still keep the new swing mechanic relevant. Either way you're not going to be able to dial in distances as in the past.

Yeah 14 was NOT perfect but the fact of how easy it was to get out of the rough and bunkers were completely ridiculous. Past that and partial swings being gone since it's all about the marker now 14 is way better to base off of instead of Rory. This is why I always said 2005 was EA's best or just that era. The way swings and the marker are handled there worked fine you can do partial shots just fine. Man I want Tiger Proofing back. I can't think of any complaints for 14 online mode wise since I missed the online era.

I appreciate your optimism but EA got asked the question does the markers adjusted position cap the length of the backswing & the answer was yes. They are not adjusting the target line on the swing arc to correlate with the marker’s position because that would give the ability to partial swing & it’s confirmed they thought it was too difficult.

It was a really helpful interview and set of questions that I'm sure everyone here is grateful got published 👍🏼. Just a shame what some of the answers were ☹️.

It was a shame indeed..

OS staff was even saying how "we'd probably be very happy with some of the answers!" before it was posted.

There's a lot to love about the upcoming release, but still being stuck with the "distance via aiming arrow" and also the lowered FPS on consoles are bummers

Update:  No weather or dynamic time of day also really suck.  I was really expecting better on these two things, especially for a next-gen game

I read the interview and I didn't get the impression that it would be as simple as dial the marker and swing 100%.

As I understood it, it would be somewhat limited to how far you could move the distance marker and instead you had to rely more on a different shot type or shot shaping to really get the distance you were aiming for.

It was stated that distance adjustments would be limited on approach shots & selection of a more appropriate shot type from the menu of twenty would be an option or shaping the shot to add or take off distance.

This is all great but when it comes to the input from the player is all you are doing with each & every shot is pulling the analog stick back full travel & pushing it forwards full travel, this represents no sense of achievement for shot making for me personally.

I doubt I can even see myself using the 20 shot types in a speedrun of the game unless it's really needed. It'll just have to depend how it feels when it launches. Another problem I seriously hope does not happen is when this game becomes just like 06 where in 06 Alpha builds the gamebreaker mechanic works and functions just fine with no bugs but the retail version is a buggy nightmare and doesn't work when needed. In this game that would translate to a mechanic in the retail build not functioning as well as it did in earlier builds which depending on what the mechanic is is gonna matter alot.

Why do a speedrun in the first place though? Sure do this if it's what you enjoy but criticising part of the game not being useful for such an unusual use-case doesn't seem particularly farir

My take is that the range of shot types is good to have, although I'll bet in time players will learn which are most useful and overwhelmingly use a smaller set most of the time.

You'd be shocked how many bugs I can find through doing that over casual play. It happens alot as I have learned and seen.

That wouldn't shock me in the slightest. Not really sure what this has to do with my last post though.

I don't see the problem with partial shots.  If you don't like the way they are being implemented in the game, what is to stop you putting the marker at the full distance of the chosen club, just using the marker for directional purposes, and then playing the shot with less power accordingly?  That way you are using partial swings.  

My own main concern is that it might be too easy to hit straight shots.  I'm reserving judgement on that until I see some actual gameplay.  If it turns out that I can hit fairways off the tee 90+ percent of the time (real pros tend to be about 60 to 70 percent) I will lose interest rapidly.

You can’t put the marker at 100% & swing at anything less because the tempo element is linked to the marker’s position and a short swing would be recorded.

Let me rip the bandaid off:Go to 2k if you want to literally struggle to even attempt to hit a straight shot . The ways of swinging and dialing distance with the marker like it's the arcade 2005 era is * dead. I say arcade because the 360 era of it is very iffy. Hitting shots straight has always been an EA thing unless you're playing 14 on simulation mode. Go to 2k if you hate it.

I don’t understand why we don’t hold EA to a higher bar here?

They are making a fully licensed “Pro” golf game

Pro golfers don’t automatically hit perfect straight shots and all the fairways all day long. 

EA’s approach here is not faithful to the sport they are attempting to represent. 

I am going to hold my judgement until I can get hands on experience myself with the swing mechanic. Maybe even seeing a preview of a content creator playing a little before launch and seeing them experiment with it would be cool to see too.
