PvZ GW2 - Levels Resetting When Going to Backyard - Steam

As about a week or so from writing, there has been a bug where when you return to the backyard from any other gamemode, your level will either reset or regress significantly and as time goes on, it's getting worse. Originally there were work arounds to this issue but they no longer work. My most recent fix that has stopped working was that, I had to close the game without touching anything when returning to the backyard, validate my steam files, and then return to the backyard. I also couldn't play more than 3 games in a row without returning to the backyard, or my most leveled save would have reset. However, I believe that this is a server issue rather than a locally hosted one, meaning that the player-base can't do squat until EA fixes the high loads that the servers are receiving due to the current influx of players. The issue is also getting worse with level reset because you originally could wait for it to update but that seems to no longer be the case.

I also recall a very similar issue when the game launched on Steam but I can only assume that the original fixes no longer work due to the fixes that someone on the original staff team implemented at the time for the original bug. We can only hope that EA will actually act on this game and put someone on to fix it because, as of writing, the Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare staff and developers have all left for other projects. We can only pray to god that EA recognizes and fixes this.

I have no known fixes for this issue as I've stated, my original fix has stopped working, saving in the globe no longer works, or the waiting in the character select for a few minutes, has all led me no-where. I've reinstalled the game on multiple drives, edited some files, and I'm constantly validating on steam. If anyone has any other fixes that they know of, or a relatively new one, please include below.

Thanks, and God speed.🙏

  • The only method I know is the one you have listed. I am trying to figure out other methods that are 100% effective I will keep you updated if I find anything new.

  • Update: I found if you enter another match and wait 15-20 seconds and then leave for the backyard, it will save 90% of the time. It's not a all around fix but it's better than nothing and works. (for me at least)

For Multiplayer, finish the game, let it go to back to the mutiplayer lobby and into the next game. Afterwards once you get into the new mulitplayer game, select a character and wait 15-20 seconds then return to Backyard.

For other modes, try to generally do the same thing with continuing to a new game and waiting a few seconds and then going to Backyard. Like with Ops, once it puts you back into the level select screen after playing a Ops game, choose any level and do the same as multiplayer. I haven't tried it on any modes other than multiplayer but it should work. (I hope)

  • Adding onto this: I've also noticed, if you play multiple different characters during a match (or across multiple matches) before returning to backyard, this method above only 90% guarantees the LAST CHARACTER YOU PLAYED saves.

In one of my matches, I leveled up my Toxic Rose to Level 10, THEN leveled up my Fire Rose to Level 5 in the same match, and when returning to the backyard the Fire Rose Level 5 saved, but not the Toxic Rose Level 10.

So to add onto this, its also better, especially if you are going to play multiple matches in a row, PLAY THE SAME CHARACTER EVERY MATCH, or at least end your final match playing the character you most want to save. It seems like this server bug is causing the backyard to only remember the levels of the latest character that you played.

However, on a brighter note, this method above has worked nearly 100% of the time for me, and I also have not needed to wait 15-20 seconds. I just leave the match right when the character select screen shows up.

  • And just to clarify, sometimes the server decides to be nice and save everything, but as a more full proof method I have had great success playing with the same character every match before returning to backyard as playing multiple have given me the problem listed above numerous times. Again, saving multiple character progresses will work sometimes, but not always.

I'd love to hear what has worked for other people too.
