Are we witnessing the slow demise of Skate.?

I don't think there is any hiding from it, this game is a disappointment.

15 years of waiting for something that feels like it has been thought about for around 15 mins.

The game lacks any soul, personality or expression that the previous games had.

The recent Halloween themed areas were dismal. They weren’t fun to skate, felt completely unrealistic and lacked any real creativity. I’m sure there will be something similar at Christmas.

The game is still riddled with bugs which is evident from the countless reports on this forum.

The question is, where to we go from here?

I have reached Level 10 in each zone about a month ago. My choices are, play the same challenges over and over again, or spend all my coins on some loot boxes that don’t interest me. Yes, there are a few good spots to session, and you can spend 10 mins in each, but the flow of each area you find, at least for me, doesn’t match the previous games.

I think it is time a lay down the controller for a few months and have a look back in January to see if there have been any changes.

Sorry Skate. I really did want to love this game, and I have given it a good go. I think it just falls so far short of where it could have been.

I’m happy that WRC 2024 is a free download on this month’s PlayStation store, so I’ll be there for a while now.

  • The frustrating thing is that the game has so much potential. I was in the playtest for a long time like others were and some of the changes prior to early access were promising. However, that momentum has not carried. The big picture things like art style, cosmetics, game loop, and lack of culture are being studiously ignored, despite being long term points of concern within the community.

What is ultimately killing this game is the lack of transparency. We are being told ‘it’s early access’, but there’s no vision being shared for what they are aiming for. Where we do have that info (the 2022 preview video), we see a vastly different game - suggesting that they pitched sharply toward a different target audience, resulting in the identity crisis title we are left with. With that track record and the ongoing silence, it’s hard to trust any of the statements that the dev team have come out with. They look very much like empty platitudes.

I was in the playtest too. Trying to give feedback in the hope that things may have changed.

I think the lack of culture is the one for me, and it is just so far removed from any of the previous games.

As a standalone title, it isn't a bad game... It's just not Skate.

  • Atleast your not complaining about the 4 micro transactions people think ruin the game

MTX are negligible in a well-designed game. No one cares too much in Fortnite for example, because there's so much other things to enjoy. The MTX seems to be the only feature that Skate is focused on. Currencies, cosmetics... It's a lot of the game's focus.

There should be concentration on what players can do with these amazing mechanics. Now? You either free skate or do your chores AKA challenges and unlock inauthentic gear.

It sucks that the most exciting thing that's happened in the last few weeks has been two free decks.

They need things for players to do in the game. Competitions, races, voting on footage in-game, etc. For now, we simply exist among each other. These are not new complaints.

Just stating that people have had these complaints for a while.
