Error: You must have a chest piece stamped in order to unify

I am having issues in SWTOR, I just purchased an outfit from the Cartel Market as well as a dye pack.  I placed the dye pack onto the outfit's chest piece and applied it.  The top now reflects the new colors, and shows that it is stamped with the colors.  When I try to unify the top with the rest of the outfit, I get the error "You must have a chest piece stamped in order to unify colors for this outfit.".  But the chest piece IS stamped with a dye pack, and shows it when I mouse over it, as well as go into customize the chest piece.

I have removed the chest piece, removed the whole outfit, put them all back on, put on only two pieces, logged out, logged in, restarted the game, etc.  Nothing I do is making this error go away.  What am i missing, or what can be done to fix this issue?

The error you are getting is when you are using the outfit designer.  You need to first create an outfit by adding all the pieces into it, safe the outfit and then you can unify it.

If your just trying to unify colors only, you would click on the Customize appearance button which is just to the right of the second set of character stats.  Clicking on this should bring up the following window and you would check Unify Colors.

Note that if you are not a subscriber, you will need to either subscribe or purchase the unify colors character optimization from the cartel market if you haven't done so already.

I placed the dye color into the Dye Module slot of the chest gear itself (Crtl-Right click to modify). It does show the new color for the chest gear when I wear it. Then when I go into the Outfit designer to Unify the colors, it is when I get this error message when I click on the "Unify Colors" button.

Additionally, I don't get this error with any of my other characters. Yes, I am Preferred status, and have been away for about 2 years and now coming back. Have they made a change to cause this error?
  • Hey @Mythandri

Did you also use a chest piece in the clothing designer slot? There must also be a chest piece to unify the armor there.

@RealymanLP, I am not trying to transmog another chest item, I am wearing the original chest piece, and just want it to color the rest of my gear to match this chest piece (which happens to be the rest of the outfit I purchased). There's only one outfit involved here. Not one layered over another.

@Belgorad, on a guess I tried purchasing the unify colors customization from the market, but I can't use it... it says that I already have access to this feature.  So THAT idea is already out, and now I've lost 210 cartel credits.

In order to unfiy colors through the outfit designer you first have to create an outfit and save the outfit. To do this, simply go to the main character tab, unequip your helm, chest, gloves, belt, legs, boots and wrist gear.

Next go into the outfit designer tab, whichever you wish to create the outfit from.  Equip the gear from your inventory by right clicking on it which will add it to the outfix tab.  Once this is done, confirm the changes which will cost credits.  Once the changes are saved, click on the Unify Colors button on the bottom of the window to unify the colors.

Unfortunately the way the page works, you have to equip the gear from your inventory into the Outfit tab, save changes, pay the cost to save then unify colors.

As for the item to unify colors, email support@swtor.com to see if they can refund you the item since you cannot use the item.  The other option is to sell it on the GTN once the bind timer expires. The cartel Market should have given a Triangle with an ! to warn you that you don't need the item if that was the case.

  • Hey @Mythandri

If you want to use the outfit designer for your clothes, the chestplate slot must be used.

If you are wearing it as a normal outfit (not with the clothing designer), color unify should be possible if you wear the breastpiece normally.

Is the "Unify Clothing" button grayed out for you or clickable? If it is clickable, you already have the activation.

If this sign  is displayed next to it, you do not have the activation.

    @Belgorad, @RealymanLP

Thank you both for your assistance and patience.  After reading through the messages again, and beating my head against the keyboard, I realized what I was missing and what I didn't read properly.   I was going straight into the Outfit designer, when I should have used the Customize Appearance button on the main character page.  That allowed me to use the Unify Color's feature properly, and now everything is matching properly!

Also, as suggested, I have emailed SWTOR support to see if they can refund me the Unify Colors item I purchased in haste, as I cannot use the item given that apparently I have already unlocked this feature for all of my characters.

  • I think I was running into the same problem if I understand what your frustration is. If you are trying to unify colors in the outfit designer or whatever it's called, it does show what you are currently wearing by default but you have to specifically and actually place all of the gear you want saved to that outfit into the slots in that window in order to unify colors to them.
