We must give the new updates and the big upcoming one some time.
The devs/admin had given us some hints on what type of characters to farm in the future.
I was sitting at rank 3-20 in my shard rarely in the first 3 ranks and now i have been first in my shard at payout time for 2 days in a row with 2 completely different teams.
They want to make it a durable game.
That's my opinion but i kinda agree with you.. and i'm a star wars fan and will always play it whatever happens but spending less as you said x)

Didnt they just do a massive nerf to most of the slow characters.
