You hit the nail on the head in your plan. Why would anyone ever spend $1000 between events if it will mean absolutely nothing to their performance? If by spending you automatically get matched with players with the same roster, why would anyone spend?
Right now if you spend that $1k well, you will get a bunch of climbing, winning heaps of extra crystals.
With your plan, you might bump up a rewards level from your gp increase. Maybe. But your experience in the game will not improve.
