I think they RNG on teams is too varied. It you start with an average R5 team, the rng varies them from R2 difficulty to what seems R11 at times. I had a JML team nuked by troopers on sector3 hard mode the other day. I got one single turn with JML....he didn't go first either at speed 570. I redid the node and took them out easily enough for R7 team vs R6, but still. That shouldn't happen with a normal RNG applied. They just allow it to go overboard in the name of forcing people to buy more energy.
