If it was not intended to be a main part of the game, I think they messed up. Ships are the only way to get the all important zetas. The ship fleet store is the best way to get gear and former P2P toons as well. I like that the rewards have a minimal difference. Someone wants to lock me out of top 5 come payout?? Oh well. Don't care because of the minimal difference.
Personally I don't mind ships especially now that I can speed up animations.
