Something nefarious seems to be going on with Coliseum. I think if you spend some money but not enough money CG won’t let you get past tier 5 unless you spend more money. My toons are all 7 star ...

Interesting. I only spend $20 on the episode pass and unlock "major awards": New legendary character at g12 with 2 R6 LSTs as rewards, All new ERA toons at G12, Lots of Era Currency for more LSTs or Signal Data...
You should be getting them all to relics with the pass. Granted I saved for the 5900 crystal pack too but last era all mine went straight to Relic 2.
Last era with pass, for all Era toons, max I could get was lvl 75 at 4 stars - No crystals spent on extra stars. That converted to G12+3 gear slots full.
G12+3 is Era Level 70. 75 is G13.
Please correct me if I am mistaken, but the era material 7 and 8 could only be purchased with cash. There was no way for F2P to get past Era level 65 which put F2P at G12. R0 was achieved at 70. And you had to buy the era mat pack with cash, materials were not in the episode track. Maybe there was enough mats for 1 toon with the release of Spider-Maul if you had 5 star. I can't remember.
You are mistaken.
Era Level 65 = G12
EL 70 = G12+3 (left side pieces; achievable with Episode Pass, no crystals spent on shards or extra Era gear)
EL 75 = G13/R0So with episode passes, which means you have to pay something in order to get the benefits so it tricks you into spending money
