So I'm not trying to be a smart allec, and I respect your opinion, but it sounds like you're saying by default the most intelligent character should be a white male, and that people of other races/ sexual orientation/gender should only be In movies or tv when its relatable to the story.
My opinion is that as a society we are trying to include some diversity in TV & movies because we are all human beings, capable of anything regardless of what we look like and who we love. So the smartest people on a show could be anybody: black, white, asian, gay, straight, etc.
I think this a good thing especially for younger people who love sci fi. It shows that your character determines what you can do in life and not how you look or who you love. And they have such little representation now in tv/ movies, I think studios want movies/ tv to start representing what our country looks like, so that includes everyone. It's getting better now, but when I was a kid all super heroes and sci fi heroes were white men. Imagine being something other than that, and what kind of message that sends.
Again I'm not judging you or calling you racist just offering a different perspective.
But I don't like when people have to pretend a movie or show is awesome just because of this. For example people said Wonder Woman was the best super hero movie ever when it came out.
Too me that is condescending and an overcorrection. Movies & tv should be judged on the body of work itself. We should be allowed to say, hey wonder woman wasn't that great if we feel that way, and not automatically be judged as sexist.
Personally I loved Black Panther, but if some one didnt like the movie they should be able express their opinion without being deemed a racist.
Anyways just my 2 cents.
