Lightspeed Token query

Are the lightspeed tokens supposed to consume character shards a player owns?

asking b/c after redeeming the free imperial remnant LST the 20 scout trooper shards I bought with episode tokens/credits in the shipments were consumed after using the LST, and feels kinda lame to 'lose' them because of a quirky interaction.

if they are, could there be a small section in the description of the token stating that it will do this.
