Please stop doing this

Dear CG,

As a player for over 5 years, not free to play, I just have to tell you that I’m starting to think about quitting this game. Yes, it’s a free game, but the heart of it is getting wrecked. 

The cosmetic updates are kind of cool, but for me the game is about being able to achieve newly set goals with a couple of fellow minded nerds. Due to a combination of factors, achieving those goals is getting harder and less fun with the last updates. Who in their right mind is going to pay for those episode passes when we got so much stuff for free before. There wasn’t anything wrong to me with GC, even though some requirements were really bothersome from time to time (who has a Tusken squad?). 

With these last updates it feels like you’re shifting your player base away from Star Wars fans and towards people who are willing to keep on paying for a game. If that’s fine with you guys, there’s not much left for me here. I could do so many other things with the time I spend on SWGOH. For now I decided I’m not spending any more money until this game feels like it supports their players. You guys were so on the right track for me, love the Ahsoka stuff, love Jar Jar. But right now to me you’re just one bad decision away from having me (and some of my guild members) quit. I hope it’s not something like an Acolyte meta, but it’ll probably have to do with getting less resources unless you pay more money again. For someone who doesn’t have a lot of income, the choice is becoming easier with the last updates. Apparently this game is not for me anymore. 

I really hope this thing turns around

    100% on this, same situation for me. I didn't mind paying a few bucks a month for the Conquest Pass but it's like 90% of what I enjoyed about this game has evaporated since the update.

      I know right! I used to treat myself every once in a while with a lightspeed bundle or a small thing that helped me wrap up a farm. But I’m holding off for now

    The weird thing is this update isn't going to attract new players, it's only going to drive away the people who were happy to pay every now and then. CG keep acting like this game has massive overheads but their servers literally just store data - they don't have to have lobbies with physics etc so the server processing overhead is minimal. All they're doing is trying to keep investors happy, not the players, but without players they wont have investors either.

    Very, very weird update. Greed has destroyed this game and there's no way in hell I'm spending another dime on it. I'm about 2k down since the game released but that's all the money CG are ever getting from me.

    Thanks for all your replies, I just wanted to share this on CG servers in the hopes that they would actually read this and take my concern seriously. That might be bit much to ask for, but still. I actually replied to p74lorvtb4rq, but somehow my comment couldn’t post. 

    The idea of my reply was like this; it even makes sense to gamify your dailies more, I actually like the idea. It was an unnoticeable part of game that now becomes part of a larger profession, very cool. But I get the feeling like I’m a second-rank player for not buying the episode pass and progressing in a way that this update was clearly made for. 

    Call me naive, but I hope you’re so wrong about investors. I hope the CG team is made up of people who actually like to make fun stuff and just screwed up by making something lots of people feel like another hoop to jump before this game gives you a feeling of being rewarded. But it certainly feels like it’s all about money, profits, investors and not about developing something that you’re proud of and want to share with the world.

    And yes, I’ve heard about the compensation in episode currency. But it feels like such a disconnection with your player base to not even acknowledge they changed a part of the game (GC) that didn’t need fixing and made it feel overcomplicated. I’m still not satisfied until I don’t feel like I’m not the target group of this game anymore. I spend a lot of time on this to have some fun, but I don’t need to. And I’m very aware of that.

      Agree 100%, you make some great points.

      With regard to investors; I always see any company as a two headed beast.

      There is one part of the company that loves the product, they're the developers etc in this case. They enjoy making the game and hope the community has fun with what they've created. Then there's the other part, the second head, which is the c-suite execs and by virtue the investors. These people don't care one iota about you or the product, they only care about profits. They could be selling orange flavoured bubblegum for all they care so long as it's profitable.

      Unfortunately, the second head drives the first head (no pun intended gentlemen!) and while the developers want to make a fun and engaging game I'd wager that the majority of this paywalled nonsense and egregious monetisation has come from the c-suite and the devs have their hands tied, they have to incorporate these changes if they want to keep their desks.

      Don't conflate the "CG team" with CG/EA management, which is who I was referring to, they're two very different entities with almost diametrically opposed ethos. That being said it's my mistake for just saying "CG" without delineating for clarity.

    What's wrong with an Acolyte meta? Jar Jar is widely hated, but he made it into the meta, and you like him. I'm one of those persons who can't tolerate the character, but it's legit Star Wars content and so even with all the things I've complained about, I never posted anything that suggested that CG should not bring Jar Jar to the game. He's not what I like, but he's clearly what some Star Wars fans like. 

    So could you be more explicit about what's wrong with bringing Acolyte content to the game. Again, it has a broad group of detractors, but also it has its fans and it, too, is legit SW content. What makes Acolyte not okay? Is it just your personal preference or is there something I'm missing that would harm the game in some way? (Maybe you think that they don't fit within existing factions and that attempting to do so would change the balance in a bad way -- anything like that would be useful to know and would be separate from whether or not you as an individual like or dislike the show.)

      Fair point. For instance, there’s a guy in my guild who hates Obi-Wan Kenobi and he unlocked JMK last week. 

      For me, it’s like this: I think the sequels could have been done better, but I can empathize with the characters in the movie. That’s what I personally missed in The Acolyte. I couldn’t make sense of the characters, their choices and motivations felt quite arbitrary to me. I won’t drag in the reviews for this show, I’m well aware that it has been review bombed multiple times. But it’s safe to say that it’s a controversial series among SW fans, right? In general there has been more excitement for the Mandalorian and Ahsoka shows. 

      When I take a look at the Ahsoka GL requirements, there’s a lot moving towards R9, which takes a long time (fine with that, big rewards take big farms). But I don’t think many players would like to farm Master Sol to R9 or Jecki Lon to R7, in order to beat the Ahsoka meta. Yes, it’s official Star Wars content, but I got canceled because there were a great deal less people that liked the show than when for example Tales of the Jedi was released. I just think it would be an unpopular en unnecessary move to make them meta in SWGOH.
