What about folks who LIKE collecting shards? Your experience--while totally valid--isn't the only experience out there. I like Star Wrs, but I'm not a superfan who even really has a favorite character (in point of fact, my favorite cgaracter would be the Imperial Agent I made in Old Republic. I'm anywhere from ambivalent to apathetic to outright hostile (Boba Fett is dumb fanboy fodder) on most canon characters) so it's fair to say I disagree with your fundamental premise.
