if they're absent they can't claim the rewards. Furthermore, you get arena rewards everyday even if you havent logged in that day, so it's not that silly at all.
I don't think you should get an automatic 0 for raids at all. I'll use my guild as an example. I would say about a third of us aren't very active but do contribute (we're not a hardcore guild where we require log-ins everyday, etc.). So Joe-Shmoe logs in maybe once a week, to maybe a week and a half. During that time, the guild has completed X raids. Joe-Shmoe should get rewards for not participating in the raids? This person would automatically gain good gear, currency, etc. and not do anything? Not fair at all IMO, they would get a participation trophy and end up gearing toons without doing anything.
I'm cool with the Joe-Shmoe's of the galaxy getting #50th place rewards for doing nothing if it means it makes managing my guild that much easier. Fair? not really, but it's not like those Joe-Shmoe's are getting ahead of dedicated players or anything. Let the rewards expire within a reasonable timeframe and chances are the Joe-Shmoe's won't even claim their non-participation throphy.
The downside is small compared to the upside imo.
