Pretty sure mods just worked off of you base stats which are based on your gear...so "invalidating gear" is rather a bit of a straw man IMO.

Even the solid stat numbered ones just added to what you had already. The percentage based ones, the same. And that's where the diversity could have come into play the most. And the set bonuses being nerfed to, as batman brought up, is a bit of a slap in the face as well. Made them more worthwhile to farm sets and level them.
