You must be new here. I mean literally - new on the planet Earth. Just a few years back such terms as "f2p", "monetization" or (random) "loot box" didn't exist. You could buy a game, play it and have a time of your life without spending another dime. If you didn't manage, you could always cut the corners typing iddqd, idkfa or buy a magazine, use a hex editor to mess with save files.
This is generation X designing and consuming. Overworked, brainwashed, always in a hurry. No wonder someone figured that if someone spends one hour playing the game but make 30$ instead working, he might pay 10$ to "speed up the entertainment".
If 25 years ago someone was selling random cheat codes for "Doom" in envelopes on the street 10 bucks a pop, he would be put in a mental clinic, probably same cell as his customers. Now, look where we are...
