The stun cuff conspiracy.

Have you ever watched a show where the people in the future have been brainwashed by technology, and a code word acts as a signal to begin their programming?

Well I think this might be happening now. Think about it... we have a highly competitive game where one resource is highly prized due to its scarcity: stun cuffs. When we need them, it causes anxiety. When we get them, we get an endorphin boost. Perhaps there is more to this than meets the eye. This sounds Pavlovian to me...

Also, what are stun cuffs? They imprison people. Why would we need something restrictive to make characters more powerful? Perhaps this is a warning?
