I like the OP suggestion. Just out of interest, you mentioned this elo rating and 'similar' systems have been used - care to give a brief overview of alternatives for those of us with no experience in the area?
Mark Glickman has done a lot of work on improving Elo ratings, culminating in his "Glicko" system which is used in a number of competitive games. You can read more about it by clicking here.
