What is the point of Era Challenges?

Haven’t had the best time with the new era system. Feel I have been doing nothing the past couple days waiting for the era challenges to come out. Now I find out I can get 40 era level currency and that’s it? I don’t want to spend money but it honestly feels like the only way to feel progression on the new units. Are we getting more currency later? Don’t really feel like logging on to play cause new content feels like a waste of time.
