What's the point in running a Dark (Empire) Team?

Is the devs intention that all the players should run a Light (rebel) team? I fell like the game is punishing me at every point for choosing to play a dark team (by the way I am the only one in my gui...

Maybe i watched different movies, read different books and played different SW games than the devs, but wasn't a theme in the Star Wars universe that the dark way was the easier, more apparently powerful way while the light one was harder but more rewarding ? :)
I know this is just a game but i find kinda funny how the universe was implemented in it.
