Why were 8x Battle refreshes never brought back?

If I remember correct they changed each energy node refresh to 8 battles instead of the standard 5 for the release of JKR, or around those lines. We had it for a while, and then they dropped it, but ...

I don't remember that, but in general, why can't refreshes be like cantina? What problem is being solved by having limits on the energy spent at one time? In some cases, you already paid for it or just acquired the energy then to use it, you need to pay again to spend it? Thats like being double taxed.
