Just got a new Google Play Games update. SWGOH works on my phone again!
So I've actually managed to find a workaround to get back in - I was able to log in using a second device, which I used to link my account to facebook. After that, I started the game on my main device using the guest account, let the cutscene start and then clicked the "already have an account" option and signed in using the facebook transfer. After that, I've been able to log in without any problems.
*Edit. If you are already previously linked to Facebook, then simply login as guest and link from there
Confirmed. The Facebook workaround worked for me too.
Nothing works for me
Workaround found: Go back to old Google Play version.
You need the app "Droid Hardware" to figure out DPI version and cpu type of your device
then grab the right apk from here:

De-Install the 2020-06 version of Google Play from your device (this won't delete any settings).
Upload the APK to your device, if you did not make the download directly on it.
Open a file browser, search the apk file and klick it.
You might be asked to activate insecure installations - which you must confirm.
Installation should only take a couple of seconds
Next, go to Play Store and search in "Your software" / "installed Software" for the "Play Games" entry. Do NOT hit the update button, but look for the three dot context menu and deactivate the auto-update.
Next, go to the Settings App, and De-Activate the insecure side-installation option for security reasons.
Next - enjoy the game!
