Thanks for the ally code @TashAureus, that one worked.
Looking at our internal logs it logs like the Google authentication service is not responding for you. Not sure what might be the problem with it in this case, but it doesn't appear to be widespread. We keep digging to see if we can narrow it down.

@TashAureus unfortunately, not that we are aware of.
One thing you could try is to remove the GooglePlay account from the device, restart the device, and then add that account again to trigger the authentication once more.

I tried this suggestion and it did not work for me.

I am having the exact same problem, and it's gone on for over an hour. I've tried restarting my phone, clearing the app storage/cache, reinstalling the app, trying on wifi and on data, and removing Google play access for the app. Nothing has helped.

Greetings,
have you already tried to uninstall the GooglePlay Games App?
To do so, please go to settings > Google Play Store > Android preferences > Applications.
There you’ll get the option to delete the GooglePlayGames App. After that reinstall it again.
Please report back if it has worked.
