Application has crashed and sims keep disappearing!

Every 10 minutes when trying to play I receive an 'application has crashed' notification and the game closes. When trying to place families onto a lot, the game will load with missing sims and pets - the ones that appear have no wants or needs. 

Game is basically unplayable! Any fixes?
