Sims 2 Crashing after 2025 update

I can’t find anything online about someone else having this issue. Since the update, I can’t load into any household after starting the game because “Direct 3D returned an error: D3DRR_INVALIDCALL! The application will now terminate.”  So now Sims 2 is entirely unplayable.
My drivers are up to date.
My pc is up to date.
The Sims 2 is up to date.
I also attempted to repair the game.

Any help would be great. I don’t play with mods or cc and I’m already so far into this gameplay that it would be unreasonable to have to uninstall and reinstall each time an update comes out.

  • I uninstalled mine in hope I could play atleast . But nothing changed and I’m still unable to load anything atall now . Hope it’s fixed soon

  • i bought it yesterday and it hasn't gone past the main menu ONCE. I'm so upset. i've tried so many things and nothing is working lol

  • Update, they released a new update today. I downloaded it but it only changed my error code to just “crashed” every time I try to load into any household. I uninstalled and reinstalled and it all remained the same.

  • yup, the new update did nothing lol. they need to give us all a refund or a partial refund for releasing a game that you cannot even play properly. this is actually insane

  • This was happening to me after the first patch I saw a workaround in another thread that helped me, which is to turn shadows off. You can't do it from Neighborhood view, but if you go into Create a Family or an empty lot, you should be able to do it from there. Hopefully that helps for now! It's what worked for me and others, at least.

  • update again!: they released another update and I’m able to play again. The only thing now is that it crashes 3-4 times an hour. I’m saving frequently but it’s frustrating still. Hopefully I can find some work around like the comments above
