Sims 2 legacy won't launch at all

Hi, I downloaded the game through the ea app a few days ago and cannot get the game to actually launch. I have a decently strong computer with windows 10 and have never had issues staring a game before. When starting up the game it will either make my screen go black with only the mouse pointer moving and i'm unable to access even the activity manager. Or it will show my home screen in a completely different resolution that I am unable to interact with other than opening (but not interact with) the activity manger. In both cases the only way I can get out is by shutting the computer off and trurning it on again, or else it is completely stuck. When I can open the acitvity manager it says that the game is running fine and the ea app claims that I have played for 5 minuites so something is presumably working but I still can't play.
