Build-n-Share Challenge # 10 - The Sloppy Bachelor

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

You decided to stop by the community pool during your lunch break for a quick refreshing dip in the pool. Arriving at your office, you pass by your assistant, who was looking quite strange with a clothespin clamped over her nose.
In a nasaly voice, she says, "You have a client waiting in your office."
You decide not to inquire about the clothespin and open the door to your office, where an immediate waft of air immediately hits your senses and you understand why your assistant has that thing over her nose.
The nervous man quickly stands up and reaches for your hand. "Hi. My name is Jimmy. Jimmy Applejacks."
You regretfully take his hand for a quick sweaty handshake before taking a seat at your desk, reminding yourself to wash your hands as soon as the client leaves.
"What can I do for you Mr. Applejacks?" you inquire.
"Please, call me Jimmy," he responds and continues. "I think I am in way over my head. You see I recently bought a piece of land after moving out of my mom's basement."
The smell was getting to you, but you try your best to continue to listen, crinkling your nose a bit.
"You see... I thought I could build a house myself, and I have... but... Well, I don't know quite how to explain so I brought some pictures." He then ruffles through a pocket and produces some bent photographs, laying them out across your desk.
"Oops, not that picture. I don't know how that got in there. That's the picture I used for my online dating profile," he laughs nervously before shoving the picture of him back in his pocket.
Not wanting to get too off topic, you quickly respond, "Well, Jimmy. How may I rectify your housing issue? What are you looking for?"
"The house I have built has suited me just fine. I have everything I need, as you see. But I have put myself on the market and I am hoping I can have a place where I can properly entertain and have the laaadies over, and eventually... maybe I will settle down." After a pause, he then adds, "Oh, by the way, is your assistant out there single? She is mighty pretty."
You cough a little and attempt to swing the conversation back to the house. "So what are your requirements for the house?"
"At least 3 bedrooms and 2 baths so I can eventually accommodate a family, but what is important to me now is an impressive master bedroom," he begins to blush a little before continuing. A pool would be nice and maybe a nice bar/lounge area somewhere in the house. Oh, I also need a nice office for all my computer equipment."
"What about a style? Any architectural or design style you prefer?" you ask.
"I'll leave that solely up to you as you are the expert. I am no good with those things and that is why I have come to you," he replies. "Whatever is pleasing to the eye and suits a bachelor.. something that will impress the ladies and will not scare them away."
You try your hardest not to suggest a few helpful hints about actually showering, but you hold your tongue. "What is your budget?"
"I've already sunk quite a chunk of simoleans into this build and I would like to salvage as much as possible, so if we can keep all the objects I have there now, that should help with my remaining budget of around 43k simoleans. That is everything I have."
"Hmm, I think we can swing that," you reply. At least it wasn't another starter!
"Oh, one last thing," he says. "I don't have anywhere else to stay, so I will have to live on the property as you build. I hope that won't be a problem?"
You think about it for a second and respond, "I guess we can see how that works out. Hopefully we will be done and you will have a proper place to live in a week."
With that, you stand and start to usher Jimmy out of the office, unable to stand his smell anymore.

This is not quite a renovation, but you are required to reuse all of the objects currently placed on the lot. Feel free to change any walls, foundations, doors, and windows. You can place this on any 20x30 lot. The challenge this week is to build a mid-range house with Jimmy's remaining funds, as you will be building this with him on the lot. This means some pre-planning might be needed! He has around 43k simoleans left to spend, so you should be able to build a decent sized house from that. Absolutely no kaching or motherlode cheating!

Roof Pitch Challenge
Adjust your roof so it has different pitches. If you don't already know how to, please study these links.

Make-Over Challenge
Using only the dresser and the mirror (no cheats or hacks allowed!), make over Jimmy so he is more presentable to the ladies.

There really never should have been any doubt about what I would do when I “grew up.”

Ever since I was a little girl, the preparation for going back to school has always been a time I enjoyed. From the new pair of shoes, to finding my school supply list taped on the large windows of my school, I secretly loved it all. My mom probably helped in this attitude, with her chant of “Paper, and scissors, and glue!" that she would sing each year as we pushed the cart through the crowded store aisles. It was a little disappointing when I reached that age when crayons were no longer on the list, but Mom always let me get them anyway (we still enjoy a good coloring session from time to time even now!).

Today, I still find myself excited at the prospect of another beginning: another year, another learning experience. It is funny that as an adult, I still spend most of my days at school. But how appropriate. I have always enjoyed learning, and I can think of no better profession than teaching for that! Sure, 6 a.m. will be awfully early those first few weeks, but the buzz that fills the halls on those early mornings is always a little bit of a thrill. Even the fashion show that seems to occupy that first week as students show off all their new threads is something I look forward to. The lively conversations as students and teachers alike share their summer experiences make me smile.

It’s a little difficult to leave the freedom of summer behind, but there’s something about the fall that makes that move easier. The crisp air at a Friday night football game, the crunch of the leaves under my feet as I walk into the building, the friendly, familiar faces that greet me each day.

It’s time to go back to school.

This week, Build-n-Share will celebrate what will be life for many in the coming weeks. In many parts of the world, the school year is just beginning(sorry, Mmyoko, but think of us once you are out and on break!). To explore the thrill of back-to-school season together, we’re going to reconstruct some famous schools. Think back to a favorite TV show, movie, book, or song about school. Your mission this week is to recreate it as best as you can.

In your final entry, you should include two pictures. One is of the school you have recreated, sim-style, and the other is your creation. Pick the shot that best replicates the original to show off your work. You may include your pics in your entry form this week, but only two! Please continue to include additional pics on our picture thread and in your stories to your heart’s content. It is important that you resize your photos. If you already know how to do this, please use the procedure you normally follow. If you do not, please follow the instructions below, created by Build-n-Share member, Gheez. And if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

As a side challenge this week, we will do something much like we did in Week One of the challenge. Because there is no particular client this time, you may create your own…these should be the students and staff of that school you have created! Both your build and your sims (please create them as a single household and not as part of the build) will receive a rec this week. Only the lot will be judged, for the sanity of our judges, but the sims are sure to get a lot of recognition as well. And for the ultra-creative, a story featuring both the cast and the school will receive an additional rec.

*A note: If you plan to include a cafeteria and want to have a stove, you will need to zone your school as residential. This is fine, just please note this in your final entry form, so our judges know in which bin to look for your creation.*

Build-n-Share Challenge # 12 - Home for the Homeless

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Business was booming. When you first started your firm, you had no idea your talents would have taken you this far. With many satisfied clients and a huge portfolio to show off, you decided maybe it was time to do a bit of charity work to give back to the community.

After making a couple of phone calls, you hop in your car and drove off to Riverview, where you had an appointment set up with a representative from the "Home for the Homeless" Foundation. They were thrilled when they learned of your interest to help and had hinted at a special project they had in mind just for you.

Arriving at the foundation headquarters, you were quickly buzzed in to meet with a foundation representative, Mirabell Mayfield, an elderly woman with a soft voice and a kind face. After some polite pleasantries over a spot of tea, the topic finally shifted to your next job.

"Thank you so much for giving us a call," Mirabell says with a smile. "We have heard a lot about your firm and are thrilled you have agreed to volunteer your time for such a good cause."

"I am super excited to be given this chance to do something for the community," you respond. "Home for the Homeless was the first foundation I thought of."

Mirabell smiles warmly and continues, "The stars must be aligned. We have a very special project that we have just finalized the budget for and we would love for you to build the perfect home for this family." Mirabell then hands you a plain manila file folder.

You take the file folder and flip it open, carefully scanning each document along with some pictures. You quickly learn that the family in question is for an elderly gentleman and his daughter.
After glancing over some donation stubs, you get the impression you'll have quite a decent budget to spend as well.

As if she read your thoughts, Mirabell chimes in. "We have managed to raise 75,000 simoleans for this family. The young lady in this family frequently donates to our foundation ... and it was only recently brought to our attention that she is homeless herself -- It came as quite a shock," she paused a bit, producing a white hankerchief to dab at the corner of her eyes. "... We just had to do something."
You take one more look at a photograph of the girl before closing the file. "Wow, this is quite a special project indeed. What a thoughtful young lady. She deserves a nice home for herself. Are there any requirements we must meet?"

"Well, of course, we would like to see a nice home for Alice. We know you have excellent taste, so we're sure you will build something nice and functional for her to live in. This family has no idea we are building them a house, so it is a complete surprise. We did manage to find out a few personal details about them. You will find some of their favorites listed in that file."

Anxious to get started, you rise from your seat, tucking the file into your briefcase. You then reach out to shake Mirabell's hand. "I am going to head back to my office and start right away! Thank you for giving me such an important project. I hope I won't disappoint."

With a few more pleasantries exchanged, you head back to your car and zoom back to your office, your mind already at work.

Some notes:

Please note that you will be building his house for the adult version of Alice and elderly Kev. You can either download and build directly on their abandoned park lot or you can start fresh on a new lot. The lot size cannot exceed 30x30.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 13 - Autumn Winters

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

Autumn Winters arrives at 7 p.m. sharp, just as you arranged over the phone. You finally have a face to put with the name. You notice her well put-together attire and wonder why she needs your help for the decorating.

Autumn is confident and sticks her hand out to greet you. “It’s so nice to finally meet you; I’ve heard so many great things about your work. I just can’t believe I managed to pin you down for my new home! It’s a true honor.”

You decide you like this charismatic woman even more.

“So you mentioned you are looking to build for next week?” You begin the usual conversation.

“Yes,” she laughs. “Always working on a deadline, it seems. I’m hoping this build won’t be too hard for you, though. My budget is a little more modest than some of the larger projects you’ve had recently, I think. What I would really like is a 1 or 2 bedroom home with a nice office. I tend to bring a lot of work home these days; have to keep up in these tough times!”

You hand Autumn a cup of water. She has barely taken a breath since she began talking!

She smiles, takes a quick sip, and continues. “And I want a place where I can entertain. A large kitchen and an open floorplan, at least for the main level of the home, would be a nice plus. I want a nice home to gather with friends and family, but also a home to impress my coworkers! I’d like clean lines and classic style, nothing too modern or too floral. My name reflects all my favorite colors: red, orange, yellow, gold, and brown.”

“Any other requests?” You ask, mostly to give yourself a pause to get everything down.

“Hmm…well, I saw the double-sided fireplace in your showroom. I’d really like that between my bedroom and the master bath…so luxurious! And a garage would be a bonus. Early hours mean lots of scraping in the mornings without one. I have a new car I want to protect…come see!”

She’s almost out the door before you’re out of your chair.

In the parking lot, she beams at you from the driver side door of a sporty red car.

“That’s about it, I think,” she says as she begins to open the car door to get inside. “Thank you SO much for your help! I can’t wait to see the home.”

Autumn pulls away in a flash; you go back to your desk to start drafting a plan.

Ralphie's Girls

You are doing some last minute touch ups in cleaning your office. After rearranging your pencils a zillion times, you glance at your watch. He is late. The curiosity is driving you insane. Ever since he called and arranged a meeting with you without any specifics, you had been wondering why such a talented and famous builder would be needing your services.

You jump a bit when your assistant buzzes in, giggling uncontrollably before finally saying, "Mr. Ninja .. I mean.. Ralphie is here to see you."

You blink a few times, unsure what to make of your assistant's behavior, but you calmly tell her to let him in.

As the door opens, you quickly rise to greet the man. You can still hear your assistant giggling outside as Ralphael quickly at winks her before walking in and shutting the door behind him.

"Good afternoon, Mr. Ninja. So glad--" you began to say before he cuts you off. "Please, call me Ralphael." At least he didn't ask you to call him "Ralphie."

"Pleased to finally meet you, Ralphael. I am quite a fan of your work. I'll admit I was quite surprised to hear that you needed my services, being such a talented builder yourself," you say as you offer him a seat before sitting back down at your desk.

He makes himself comfortable before replying. "Well, you see. I have quite a few projects going right now. And as you probably already know, I tend to tackle the more ... unusual builds."

"Oh, yes. Definitely unusual and quite amazing to look at. Your latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie set was simply incredible!" You clear your throat a bit, trying to dial down your fanaticism a tad.

"Ah, yes. I am quite fond of ships as I'm sure you've noticed. But that brings me to why I am here. I will admit that building typical houses is not exactly my forte. I don't find enjoyment in doing so and I know there are many other people who can probably do a better job at it than I."

He takes off his sunglasses and polishes the lenses a bit with a handkerchief and continues, "I have heard many good things about your work and have decided you would be the perfect builder for this .. little project I have."

"I am extremely honored you think I am good enough to build you a house," you say, trying to remain cool. "What sort of house do you need?"

"I am in need of a duplex to live in with 2 of my ..." he coughs a bit before continuing. "... 2 of my ... fans." He does not wait for you to question him before he continues to explain. "You see, I am quite ... close with these 2 fans and they have been on my case about wanting to live with me for awhile now. The only issue is that I cannot be in 2 places at once and they don't seem to like each other too much..." He pauses just a bit, coughing again. "So I'll be needing a duplex on a lot no larger than 40x40."

Everything is starting to make sense. You nod, folding your fingers together and reply, "I see. That is quite the predicament you are in. A duplex, huh? I think I can manage that. Are there any specifics and needs you are looking for in each unit?"

"I am looking for functionality of course, so each unit should have at least 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. As for style, I prefer something clean and modern. Annabelle loves white and Ashlee loves pink. I also need this built for under 100k simoleans," he responds quickly, looking at his watch.

"If you'll excuse me, I have to take my leave. I have another appointment on site .. that is a bit watery. If you have have any questions, feel free to call me." He then slides a business card across your desk, shakes your hand, and takes his leave.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 15 - The Refugees' Aqua Wonderland

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

The Refugee family, though in the news a lot lately, are still an amazing sight to see. Zena and Zenith take a seat across from you. As Zena begins to speak, you notice Zach digging into the toy box placed in the corner of your office for just such clients. His "sister," Zazy, sits quietly reading a book on the couch across the room.

“I want to thank you so much again for meeting with us,” Zena says. “We have some very unique needs, as you know, so we hope this build will be an interesting challenge for you and perhaps a fun break from the norm.”

She takes a sip from her water bottle, something they’re all carrying, you notice, before she begins again.

“Well, the most important thing is obviously water. Lots and lots of water. We’d like pools and ponds throughout the home. And if each room could also have its own bath with a shower and tub, that would be helpful. Zenith and I will share, so we only need three rooms. We’d like to give Zazy and Zach each their own space. They are pretty different, you might have noticed.”

Zach is making laser sounds as he wiggles the toy rocket through the air. Zazy is still looking at the book; you wonder if she is truly reading or trying to hear the conversation at-hand.

“Zach…Phew, Zach. He’s a handful. His room should be a lot of fun. Zazy, well, it’s been hard on her. I’d really like something special for her,” Zena continues.

Zenith chimes in, “We would really like shades of blue as a predominant theme throughout the home. We’re looking for a sort of aqua wonderland. A build that is perhaps a bit more like fantasy would be a bonus. I think Zazy and Zach would really like that.”

“How about for the two of you? Any special requests?” you ask.

“Well,” Zena says, and despite the protective glasses, you think you might detect a twinkle in those eyes. “I really would like to start collecting fish here to keep as pets. I would love to have a room dedicated to serving as an aquarium.”

“Oh, I might have some ideas already…how about you, Zenith?”

But Zenith has noticed that Zach is starting to get a little restless. She just smiles before going to join him for playtime on the carpet.

“She won’t give you anything,” Zena says after a pause for water. “But as a teen, I’m sure she’d like an area to entertain new friends. A rec room with a focus on activities teens might enjoy. She’s pretty mature for her age, you know. She has to be, with what we all went through. And to just inherit two younger siblings of sorts, well, that can’t have been easy either.”

“I can’t imagine. And I know that it must be tough on you as well. I’ll work to make sure your wonderland is everything you hope it could be. I’m just honored you selected me for the project!”

“We never want to forget our past. We each have a symbol we wear most of the time to remind us of the land we lost. But we’re ready to move on, too. We’ve worked hard to get Zazy and Zach adjusted. Trying to help them blend in as much as is possible…Zenith and I, we’re pretty comfortable in our own skin. Literally.” She laughs, trying to make the mood light again.

“If you want a side project, though, I think Zenith and I might both be ready for a makeover. Something that would still be a bit unique, but maybe a little more like what girls our age here wear. I think the boys here have a hard time with Zenith’s confidence, and, well, I think Zach might wish we would try to blend in a bit more when we’re in public.”

Zenith comes back over with Zach in-tow. “I think we’re about ready,” she says. It’s clear that “we” means “Zach.”

“Well, I’ll give you a call if I have any questions. And I’ll see you again soon!”

The four head out, raising their umbrellas high against the blazing afternoon sun.

This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

An uncomfortable silence. You aren't quite sure how to respond to the grown man sitting in front of you. You try your best not to stare back at the man's hollowed gaze, but knowing you had to respond sooner or later, you put on your best sympathetic look.

"That is quite a ... story. I am very sorry for your loss, Mr. Stevenson." You quietly take in a sigh of relief at having that uncomfortable silence broken.

His gaze doesn't waver as he responds, "It's quite alright. I was too young to remember any of it. I had only recently learned of it myself."

You look down and pretend to be jotting down notes as you continue this conversation, attempting to speed it up. "So this place ... Winterhaven Manor ... has been sitting empty ever since?"

"Yes, it has. I recently visited once and did a little bit of tidying up, but the place needs a ton of work..." he responds.

"Wouldn't it be easier to just bulldoze and--" you begin to say.

"No," he interrupts. "I really would like to salvage as much of the furniture as you can.. There is still so much to learn about the past..." he trails off, finally shifting his empty gaze away from you to stare out the window.

You nod, jotting down some real notes this time, finally feeling more at ease now that he is no longer staring so intently at you. "But I can definitely change the interior layout, correct? Give it a more updated feel so you can live in it comfortably?"

"I won't be living there. I just want to make the place nice again for the current inhabitants..." he responds faintly, still staring outside the window.

"Current inhabitants? I thought you said the place was empty?" you asked, confused.

Jacob Stevenson snaps out of his haze and focuses his stare on you once again. "Yes, it's empty. But my ... parents are buried there, so please make sure to create a nice area for them, so they may rest in peace."

Before you can respond, he continues, "Do whatever you can to fix up the structure itself. I understand the interior layout may not be ideal, so change that if you must. I definitely would like to salvage all the furniture and objects you may find on the property. Ultimately, it should have at least 3 bedrooms, 3 baths, and a study. And like I said before, the final cost of the house shouldn't exceed 200,000 simoleans.

In your notes, you underline the 200,000 you had written a few times before setting your pen down. Folding you hands together, you look up and nod at Jacob Stevenson.

This must be placed on a 30x40 lot. Nothing bigger.

This lot was built by Team Okabee (Okadoka and Anjubee) for the SimInterior Designs Haunted House challenge. I've repurposed it a bit, removing a lot of the premium content that was used, but seemed not have gotten all of it. These objects are minor though, so it shouldn't prove to be too difficult to reuse. Please let me know if you have any issues downloading.

For those who have been participating in these challenges for awhile, this main challenge is like a combination of the Biscuit's BnB remodel and The Sloppy Bachelor challenge. This is really a Create-a-Style challenge as you are required to reuse all the objects in Buy mode. You can delete anything from the Build mode, including fencing, landscaping, roofing, flooring, wall coverings, and you can manipulate the terrain. You may not alter the foundation or any exterior wall unless you are taking part in the optional challenge (please see below for details).

For the back story on Winterhaven Manor, you can read it here. This story was written by Okadoka.

There is no family to download this week as I couldn't think of a proper way to make Jacob since his parents are ghosts, but if you would like to create him, please see the optional challenge in the next post.

Build-n-Share Challenge # 17 - "Preparations..."


This Week’s Challenge Specifics:

You check your directions one more time. You’ve been walking for a bit, and the location seems a bit off-the-beaten-path. Of course, the address is a little unusual as well. “The tree with the ladder by it.” Hmm.

Just as you are about to turn around to retrace your steps around the pond, you hear the clinking sound of metal as a ladder slowly lowers to the ground. You look up to see who you only presume can be your client, dressed in camouflage.
“If you don’t mind,” he yells down, “could we meet up here?”

Well, this certainly is new. “Sure,” is all you manage to say.

Before you know it, you are climbing hand over hand into a tree. Once you’re up, “Colonel” Fearful, as he’s asked you to refer to him, pulls the ladder up behind you. You consider a “love what you’ve done with the place,” but you’re just a little unsure if Colonel would be in on the joke.

Colonel walks around on the platform and peers in each direction. Seemingly satisfied with something, he begins pacing as he talks.

“I’m sure you’ve heard the news. It won’t be long now. I’ve been saving for quite some time, $162,594 so far; I knew something like this would happen. And now it’s confirmed. THEY’RE coming. I knew it would be something big, something new, something different. But mummies? So strong! What if I fell? I do that all the time, you know.” He shudders at the thought.

“I know they prefer the dark underground, but what if they start to adapt? I just can’t take that risk. I want my house in the air. And above the water over there. He points to the pond. Do you think you could do that?”

“So a floating house over water?” Yep, definitely a new one.

“Yes. I’ll need stairs. Just a single flight, to get up. I couldn’t get that teleporter I’ve been trying to secure, unfortunately. But if you could tuck the stairs away, a little hidden by some trees or bushes or something, that would probably be OK. And then they could come up only one at a time, by which time I could hopefully figure out another way out. I wish we still had those helicopters…”

Wow, he’s really thought this thing out.

“I don’t want any of the construction on the ground level at all. And water beneath the home, so there’s only one way up, using that single flight of stairs. And a couple of doors to go through to get in, so I can add lots of locks and blocks. I’d like the home to blend in with the nature, so it’s not easily seen, too. As far as windows, nothing too big. I don’t want to feel like they could be watching…Those little high ones would be OK, I suppose, for some light.”

“What would you like for the interior?”

“Well, I’m hoping there will be a few others who may want to join me. I think more will see I am right as the time draws near. I’ve been leaving secret signs and messages around for those who might be watching for them. I hope they will come soon to help with preparations. I’d like 8 beds in a large bedroom and a common bathroom with 4 separate shower and restroom stalls for privacy. I don’t want anything too technological. I’m afraid those communications will be lost anyway, and I never trust anything I see on TV. We’ll need some entertainment, though, so some books and games would be great. And there might be a kid or two, so some toys and a crib might be helpful, too. Maybe a treadmill; we’ll need to stay fit in case of an attack. On the roof or a high balcony, I’d like to have an area for a telescope, for keeping watch. Maybe I could get a teleporter there eventually. I haven’t given up on that! And I’ll definitely need sturdy rails up there, I am clumsy, afterall. I want the lights to mostly consist of candles. It may be all we have at some point. Ohh, and we’ll need a few fridges in the home. We’ll need to stockpile what we can.”

He stops suddenly and runs to one edge. You can’t help but be deathly still. His nervousness is certainly catching.

“I’m saying too much. Someone might hear. I think that’s it. I appreciate your speed. There is so much to be done!”

You start to reach for Colonel’s hand, but he seems a little nervous about it. You just give him a big smile instead. “I’m so glad to help.”

“There will always be room for you, too, if you want.”

You give him another smile as you start back down the ladder.
